Installed Word 4 and email text is all symbols

Because I don't want to give a cent to Microsoft (and gave Apple all my $$ on this gorgeous big iMac), I didn't buy Office for Mac, but instead borrowed a friend's Word4 installer. I had been running Word X for years and never bothered to update because it worked fine. As soon as I installed Word 4 (and didn't delete Word X), my Mail went wonky. A few of my emails show up with all the test replaced by capital A's in boxes. What now? Thanks

Core i5 27", Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Uninstall the pirated copy of Word 2004, for starters. You have no right to use it unless your friend has transferred the license to you.

Chances are that one or more of the fonts installed with Word 2004 is/are conflicting with one or more fonts used by Mail. Because I don't use either app, I don't know how to suggest resolving the problem.

If you do resolve it, try the open-source NeoOffice as a substitute for Word.
