Podcast continues to play after closing on phone
Open podcast, start podcast, close screen, podcast ‘window’ open and plays, sign in on phone, close podcast, close screen, play podcast but can’t close

If you are saying that a podcast continues to play in the background after the screen is closed - yes, that is exactly how it is designed to work. It only stops playing when you click the pause/stop button.
If it will not stop playing when you hit the pause/stop button - you probably just need to force quit the Apple Podcast app - and then relaunch it.
