Apple Watch SE 2 update fails pairing with iPhone 12 Pro Max

I am using an iPhone 12 Pro Max running iOS 26.5. When attempting to pair my Apple Watch SE 2, the iPhone forces a watchOS update during pairing. The update downloads successfully, but fails during the verification stage with the error:

“Unable to verify update — The watchOS update couldn’t be verified because you are not connected to the Internet.”

I have already tried:

  • different Wi-Fi networks
  • restarting both devices
  • resetting network settings
  • unpairing/re-pairing
  • disabling VPN/Private Relay

The important detail is that the same Apple Watch SE 2 pairs successfully with another iPhone XR running iOS 18.7, without requiring any watchOS update. The watch is currently on watchOS 11.6 (22U84).

This suggests a possible compatibility or verification issue related to iOS 26.5.

Did you try to update your watch directly and pair it again to your iOS 26 iPhone afterwards?

...

If your Apple Watch has watchOS 6 or later, you can install updates without your iPhone:

  1. Make sure that your watch is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. On your watch, open the Settings app.
  3. Tap General, then tap Software Update.
  4. Tap Install if a software update is available, then follow the onscreen instructions.
