FCP long project workflow: Combining exported segments?

Workflow in FCP by sticking different projects instead of a longer project

I am currently working on my first very long project in FCP.

System : mac mini 2018, macOS Sonoma 14.8.5, FCP: 11.1.1

3.2 GHz 6-core Intel i7, UHD 630, 32GB DDR4

Project and library are on external TB bar (2TB). I noticed I regularly need to flush rendered files as Library is swelling to nearly 300 GB. I made space on the external drive, I have about 350 GB free now...

Questions about WORKFLOW from now on:

I now have 45 minutes done and was thinking of exporting this as a project, 4K, with all recommended You Tube settings, and simply start a new 45 minutes project, export that also and perhaps a third one... yet to decide.

Is this a good idea to have, say 2 or 3 x 45 min projects, then import those as a new project, just stitch these one after the other, remove temp music on this, add final music tracks and export a 1.5 - 2 hours project ? Would I ''lose'' quality doing so ?

My question is twofold: 1) I want to avoid ending with a corrupted 2 hours projects if I continue to add and add and add to just one project, so ''saving'' 45 minutes chunks can avoid me that... and 2) just can't imagine what 2 hours rendering would take in time and... disk space! ...

Any other recommended workflow or process for such long projects ?

Mac mini, macOS 14.8

Ian, are you confusing Project with Library? A Compound Clip lives inside an Event. It can be applied to any and all Project timelines you want to apply it to, copied between Events. It can be duplicated, it can be broken apart, it is very flexible. If a Project gets corrupted, you need to go to a backup, period. Compound Clips have nothing to do with something becoming corrupted or not. If the Library is corrupted, you better have a recent backup.

If you use uncompressed file exports, you're eating up tons of drive space (ProRes is good, no need for uncompressed) and then your edits are baked-in, you can't change them. Plus the time to export all those clips. Just turn them into Compounds, save drive space, save time, be more organized.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. 😉

I have had a massive project many years ago.

I exported each chapter as an uncompressed movie (Command + E (Export)).

After all chapters were done, I simply started a new project, imported all of the chapters, then I was able to complete the project with proper transitions between the chapters, background music, etc. for a seamless workflow.

You can safely delete the render files once exported if you like. 👍🏼

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Good Luck! 👋🏼😉

Luis, I may get it wrong. In my understanding, compound clip remains within ONE project. If the project gets corrupted along the way, compounded or not, everything may be lost, no?

I have used the ""compound clips'' a few times within a project when I needed to sync with music beat, but just a few seconds....

I may miss something here and I need to understand .
