Locating an External Drive on a Mac:
You’ll find it in a new Finder window. Go to Finder menu(atop the screen). Select: New Finder Window. View it in the left pane of the new window. Use the View menu to reveal the left pane, if not seen.
Mount the Drive:
If it’s not seen, see if you need to mount it.
Hold Down: command key + space bar to open. Then, type Disk Utility. Next, click the Mount button atop the window.
Using First Aid:
If having issues opening it, select the drive and then click First Aid, as it may fix a fix things.

Did you configure the Finder's settings to have mounted volumes appear on the Desktop or Finder's Sidebar? Click on the Finder's "Finder" menu and select "Settings...". The "General" and "Sidebar" buttons will give you options to allow you to access mounted volumes at those locations.
Edit: Also, externally mounted volumes can generally be found in the Finder under "/Volumes" or from the Finder's "Go" menu and selecting "Computer".
