Screen Time out of sync across Family Sharing
Hello.
I have an issue with Screen Time and Family Sharing. Screen Time settings and the Screen Time passcode appear to be out of sync between my parent iPhone, my parent Mac, and my child’s iPad.
Setup:
- I am the family organizer.
- My child uses an iPad as the main device.
- The child’s iPhone is broken/offline.
- Screen Time is managed through Family Sharing.
- App Limits, Downtime, and Content & Privacy Restrictions were enabled.
What happened:
1. I changed my child’s Screen Time passcode on my parent iPhone. The new passcode worked on the iPhone.
2. Then I checked my parent Mac and found that a different Screen Time passcode was still active there.
3. I changed the child’s Screen Time passcode on the Mac. The new passcode worked on the Mac.
4. Later I physically checked the child’s iPad and found that the old Screen Time passcode was still accepted on the iPad.
Because of this, my child could bypass App Limits and Downtime by entering the old passcode directly on the iPad, without sending any Screen Time request to the parent.
Example:
- TikTok had a 30-minute daily App Limit.
- The limit was visible locally on the child’s iPad.
- The hourglass icon was shown next to TikTok.
- “Block at End of Limit” was enabled.
- However, TikTok usage reached more than 1 hour and even several hours on different days.
After I confirmed that the old passcode still worked on the child’s iPad, I reset Screen Time locally on the iPad and temporarily configured basic restrictions directly on the iPad.
Current state:
- Parent iPhone still shows the old Screen Time settings.
- Parent Mac shows Screen Time for the child as if it is disabled and offers to set it up again.
- Child iPad has locally configured Screen Time settings after the reset.
There is also another related issue:
Screen Time / Ask to Buy request cards in Messages on my parent iPhone sometimes render incorrectly. The request card appears partially cut off, older request cards in the same Messages thread also become partially displayed, and the conversation can stay marked as unread. Restarting the iPhone temporarily fixes the cards, but the issue returns after another request. On the Mac, these requests appeared more stable.
Questions:
1. How can I fully reset and resynchronize Screen Time for a child across Family Sharing?
2. How can I make sure the old Screen Time passcode no longer works anywhere?
3. Why would a parent iPhone, parent Mac, and child iPad have different Screen Time passcodes and different Screen Time states?
4. Should I remove the child from Family Sharing and add the child again, or is there a safer reset procedure?
5. What does “ScreenTimeUnlock” mean in Screen Time activity? I saw this item in the child’s Screen Time report.
6. Is there any known issue with Screen Time / Ask to Buy request cards not rendering correctly in Messages?
I would appreciate any steps to fully rebuild the Screen Time configuration without leaving an old passcode active on the child’s iPad.
