Terminal command

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

It looks like the Full Version of Sequoia 15.7.7 is available

Try this Terminal command

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.7.7

It may download the Full Version and make a new application in the Applications folder call " Install Sequoia app "

When ready, launch it like any other application

It will self delete once 15.7.7 is successfully installed

Finding available software

Software Update found the following full installers:

* Title: macOS Tahoe, Version: 26.5, Size: 17872251KiB, Build: 25F71

* Title: macOS Tahoe, Version: 26.4.1, Size: 17814740KiB, Build: 25E253

We have a 2020 M1 Mac mini that we are holding back on Sequoia and had no issues updating to 15.7.7

What are you seeing on your Software Update panel in System Settings...?

I took the above screenshot before updating it to 15.7.7

If you notice, Tahoe 26.5 is an Upgrade and Sequoia 15.7.7 is an Update.

Sadly if Auto Updates is On or you selected the Tahoe Upgrade by mistake, then the Sequoia update will vanish.

Follow on

If using the Terminal method is not to your licking

Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal

Try Again using the Software Update Applet in System Preferences / Setting

Worst case - Restart in Recovery Mode and choose Reinstall macOS.

This in theory will pull the latest version of macOS this computer qualifies to run

I had a somewhat similar issue with iOS on my iPhone several months ago. Once iOS or macOS realize an update patch is available, the OS gets locked to that exact pending update patch until it gets installed. In my case with the iPhone Apple had pulled the update patch, but iOS could not fathom the possibility and would just keep going through a loop of trying to install the no longer available update patch. I was finally able to figure out a way to delete the no longer available update patch from the iPhone so that iOS could check for new updates with Apple again.

However, with macOS I am not aware of an easy way to do the same thing. I think it may be possible to clear things with the "softwareupdate" utility or by deleting a .plist preference file. It is a shame that Apple developers do not remember they need to account for edge cases when programming their software. Basically a programming 101 mistake.

At least @den.thed's suggestion to turn off auto updates seems have to have had a similar effect.

I really wish Apple would just hit pause on new features and just take time to fix outstanding issues that have existed for years to improve the OS functionality with the existing features. Or at the very least create a small team to address these issues while the main team adds new features.

I was frustrated today tried updating multiple time and keep getting error that version no longer available. This thread was helpful, I just turn of the Automatic Update and then it shows Tahoe 26.5 version available
thanks for this, it worked

You're also welcome. Plus, thank you for confirming that as the solution. 👍

👍 That’s a really nice way of saying, SJ would have never let that garbage roll out of the building.

LOL.

I definitely saw a change in Apple (hardware, software, repair, communication) once SJ stepped back. Curious how things will be once TC steps back. Unfortunately Apple is not alone here with this behavior. I'm not holding my breath though. Better to expect the worse & be pleasantly surprised.
