An empty optical drive is not recognized by Finder. If you insert a valid CD or DVD and the Finder does not react or if the Music or DVD app doesn't launch, then yes, you have an issue.

When you say the "writer does not work with my Mac", what exactly does that mean?

If the drive is not getting power and you have connected it through a hub, try connecting it directly to the Mac. You may need to use a USB-A to USB-C plug adapter for that. Also try connecting to different ports.

i have an asus one with 2 usb-a I just connect one of them to a computer and the only power one to a ac charger, works fine.

Is this one of the older LG Slim models that came with a single USB cable with two USB-A connectors for added power draw?

I have one here somewhere buried away in moving boxes — if I did not just toss it, so testing with my M4 Mac Mini Pro would be time consuming to find that drive now. It may simply be incompatible at this point in time.
