RCS on iPhone 15 Plus with Jio.

Hi,

I am not able to use RCS messaging on my iPhone 15 Plus running iOS 26.5. Whenever I try to send an RCS message, it says that MMS must be enabled to send the message. I am using a Jio carrier in India. According to Apple’s website, RCS is supported on Jio, so I’m not sure why this issue is happening.

How can I fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

There may be a slight delay after you first turn on RCS. To use RCS, you need iOS 18 and a mobile data plan from a network provider that supports RCS messaging on iPhone. In iOS 26, you can choose which app to use for SMS, MMS and RCS text messages. Network provider fees may apply. Contact your wireless network provider for more information.

Turn on RCS messaging on your iPhone

Similar to iMessages, which is Apple-to-Apple devices, full RCS functionality, both sender and receiver generally need RCS enabled and supported by their carrier/device.

Here’s how it works:

  • If both phones support and have RCS turned on, messages use RCS features:
    • typing indicators
    • read receipts
    • high-quality photos/videos
    • Wi-Fi/data messaging
    • larger file sharing
    • better group chats
  • If one side does not support or enable RCS, the conversation usually falls back to:
    • SMS (text only)
    • MMS (media messages)

Think of it like this:

  • RCS ↔ RCS = “modern chat”
  • RCS ↔ non-RCS = old SMS/MMS mode

A few extra points:

  • On Android, RCS is commonly used through Google Messages.
  • On newer Apple iPhones, RCS support has started rolling out with compatible carriers, but availability depends on region and operator.
  • Internet access (mobile data or Wi-Fi) is needed for RCS.

You can usually tell RCS is active if the app says things like:

  • “RCS chat”
  • “Chat message”
  • “Delivered/Read”
  • instead of just “Text message”.

Messaging Platform Requirements :

  • iMessage (Apple devices):

Requires activation for the phone number being used, or messages can be sent to an Apple ID (email address) instead.

  • WhatsApp:

Both sender and recipient must have WhatsApp installed and registered with their phone numbers.

  • RCS (Rich Communication Services):

Both parties need RCS enabled on their devices and supported by their carriers.

  • Other platforms (Telegram, Discord, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, etc.):

Communication requires both users to have accounts on the same platform and be signed in.

  • SMS (Text Messaging):

Unlike the above, SMS does not require both parties to be on the same app or platform. As long as the sender has cellular service and the recipient has a valid phone number, the message is delivered.
