iPhone 17 microphone: Works for Siri, not for calls

Hi everyone,

I’m having a very strange microphone issue on my iPhone 17 and I’m trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this.

The weird part is:

  • Siri works perfectly
  • Speech-to-text / keyboard dictation also works perfectly

But:

  • Voice Memos does not work
  • Calls don’t capture my voice properly
  • Apps like WhatsApp/Instagram/etc can’t use the microphone correctly
  • Video recordings may also have no audio

Things I already tried:

  • iOS update
  • Restart / force restart
  • Reset settings
  • Permissions check
  • Bluetooth off
  • Apple diagnostics / health check

Apple diagnostics says the hardware is completely fine. Also, microphones work normally with AirPods.

So it seems like:

  • the microphones are physically working
  • but normal apps cannot access them correctly

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Especially without replacing hardware?

Thanks!

iPhone 17 microphone: Works for Siri, not for calls: Hi everyone, I’m having a very strange microphone issue on my iPhone 17 and I’m trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this.

The weird part is:[…]

———-

Call Microphone Issues:

It might be a hardware error, or a misconfiguration issue. So, a few things to go by and try…

Provide More:

So, when did this all begin? Was it after an update? Was it after software install?

Back Up, then Set this Up Anew:

What settings did you reset? Resetting your iPhone and Erase All Content might do the job; but, just know that whatever you do not back up would be unrecoverable. So, create a backup of your data prior to the reset. That way, you can have something to recover it from.

  1. Go to: Settings app
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Transfer or Reset iPhone
  4. Tap: Reset
  5. Tap: Erase All Content and Settings

Troubleshooting iPhone Call Audio:

A. Output and Input:

B. Try a Force Restart:

If stuck in a backup, perform a Force Restart. Nothing would be lost, in fact, the transfer would pop right back up.

C. Clear the Caches:

System Data consists of caches, all of which gather over time. They are create as apps learn from your use of them so that they open quicker and testing faster. So, clear the System Data, as obstruction in the Phone app may be occurring here. Use my User Tip: How to Clear "System Data" in your iPhone's Storage: - User Tip

Have you tried Cellular Voice Calls?

What Call are you referring to is not clear from your post? On an iPhone, you can make and receive various types of calls. Here are the different types:

  1. These are standard voice calls made over the cellular network. They utilize your carrier's voice network to connect you with other phone numbers. Allow phone calls on your iPad, iPod touch, and Mac
  2. FaceTime Audio allows you to make voice calls over Wi-Fi or cellular data using your internet connection. It provides higher audio quality compared to traditional cellular calls.
  3. FaceTime Video enables you to have video calls with other FaceTime users. It uses the front or rear camera on your iPhone to transmit live video during the call. Use FaceTime with your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
  4. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls use internet connectivity to make phone calls. Apps like Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, and Google Hangouts utilize this technology, allowing you to make voice and video calls over the Internet.
  5. Some carriers support Wi-Fi calling, which allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on cellular coverage. This can be useful in areas with weak cellular reception. Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling - Apple Support (IN)
  6. The App Store offers numerous calling apps that utilize different technologies. These apps can provide additional features and options for making calls, such as international calling, call recording, and more.

It's important to note that the availability of certain call types may depend on your iPhone model, iOS version, and carrier.

Thanks for the suggestions.

One important detail I forgot to mention: the issue started right after I activated my eSIM.

I already:

  • updated iOS
  • force restarted the iPhone
  • reset settings
  • erased all content and settings
  • tested permissions
  • disabled Bluetooth
  • ran Apple diagnostics

Apple diagnostics says the hardware is completely fine.

I can hear people normally during calls, but they cannot hear me at all.

Also:

  • Siri works perfectly
  • speech-to-text / keyboard dictation works perfectly
  • AirPods microphones work normally

Another strange detail:

when I start recording audio in Voice Memos or other apps, the microphone captures sound for about 0.1 seconds and then suddenly cuts out completely.

Since the microphones still work in some parts of iOS, this feels more like:

  • an iOS audio routing issue
  • a software/firmware bug
  • or something related to the eSIM activation process

I already performed “Erase All Content and Settings”, so I’m not sure what else to try besides a full DFU restore.
