AudioBook refund denied twice

I bought a book I didn’t like. I listened for 1/2 chapter. I went to “report a problem”. Denied. I said ok, and requested a review, and added “please let me know why”. All I got back was “book doesn’t meet conditions for refund”. Why? I've returned other books (not many) in the past. I think a reason is required from Apple.

Refunds are an exception and at times Apple may provide a compassionate refund, but it should never be expected and a previous refund is no guarantee of a future refund. The actual terms of the store are that All Transactions are Final. There certainly does not need to be a reason for a denial when you understand the terms of the store purchases. The terms of use for the Apple account that states all transactions are final can be found here:

Legal - Apple Media Services - Apple

This is the agreement that also covers Books and you actually have to agree to those terms the very first time you create an Apple Account and when there are any changes in the terms. Here is the portion of the agreement where shows it includes Apple Books.

  • This Agreement governs your use of Apple’s services (“Services”) through which you can buy, get, license, rent or subscribe to content, Apps (as defined below), and other in-app services (collectively, “Content”). Content may be offered through the Services by Apple or a third party. Examples of Services include, where available, App Store, Subscriptions (as defined below), Apple Arcade, Apple Books, Apple Fitness+, Apple Games, Game Center, Apple Music, Apple News, Apple One, Apple Podcasts, Apple Sports, Apple TV, iTunes, and Shazam

I agree, a subscription service may be the better choice for you, such as the one provided by Audible. Even though this is an Apple Community Forum, we are not Apple employees and if there is a better option for you while using an Apple product, I have no problem recommending a service that better meets your needs.

A subscription service to Apple Books would be an interesting approach with one similar to Apple Music where you get all the content you want while under the subscription and you don't need to purchase any songs. The same subscription model is used for Magazines with Apple News where you can read as many magazines on the service as you want under the same monthly price without anything further to purchase. And even the one for Apple Arcade where there are about 100 games you can download and play for free without any ads or in-app purchases for the single price of $6.99/month. There just is not a similar model with Apple Books, and maybe there should be.

For Barnes & Noble, they do not offer refunds for digital purchases/audiobooks.

  • Items That Cannot Be Returned - Digital content, including eBooks, audiobooks, digital magazines and newspapers, Access Codes, gift cards, and shrink-wrapped items that have been opened, are not returnable. Not true. I have returned books in the past 10 years. And when I called apple support they didn’t know the reason - never mentioned that. It does not say anywhere that “All Sales Are Final”. They don’t know why. It is completely unfair to not be given a reason. Not acceptable. Can’t find “terms and conditions“ anywhere in the Apple book store. Also, I would be fine with a denial if the reason was legit. For instance, “all sales are final” or if a certain publisher doesn’t allow it. That’s not the point. The point is that A REASON MUST BE GIVEN.

Well - that’s odd.

I read in that explanation “from time to time”, and I haven’t requested a refund for quite some time. I subscribe to so many Apple products, Apple one, etc.

I know that in Audible you can return a book anytime (according to everyone that uses it AND I just called them). So, Audible it is from now on! Sure, I have to pay a monthly fee, but seems worth it if I don’t like a book. I mean, Barnes and Noble takes returns. This is just

unacceptable to not be given an actual reason. Seriously, if I would have received a response like yours, that would be a bad reason, but a reason. I see that it says ALL SALES FINAL, but for years I’ve bought 100’s of books and returned maybe 5-10. So, although it’s not perfect, I’ll switch to

Audible. Unfortunate for me because I’d prefer to stay with Apple Books. Oh well.
