I'm successfully running Windows 11 on my M1 iMac - it's pretty good! Unfortunately I can't get a USB/serial device (FTDI) to be recognised ... I'm trying to reprogram a UHF Transceiver ...
Any suggestion?

On an M1 iMac, Windows 11 is running through virtualization, so I would check two things first: USB assignment and the FTDI driver.
With Windows running, unplug and reconnect the FTDI adapter. If your VM asks where to connect it, choose Windows, not Mac. In Parallels, also check the USB device menu and make sure the adapter is connected to the Windows VM.
In Windows, open Device Manager. If the adapter appears under Ports (COM & LPT), note the COM number and select that same port in the radio programming software.
Because this is Windows 11 on Apple silicon, regular Intel Windows drivers may not be enough. FTDI notes that its standard Windows driver installer is not available for ARM64, so use an FTDI driver package that supports Windows on ARM64 if your adapter requires one.

If COM3 and COM4 are now visible both in Windows and in the programming software, that is a good sign. At that point I would treat it more like a radio/cable/port-selection issue than a Windows driver issue.
When you continue, I would check that the software is using the same COM port shown in Device Manager, then try the other COM port if the adapter exposes more than one. After that, the programming cable and the radio’s required connection/programming mode would be the next things to verify.

if it was me then I would try to check the maker of said usb to com port dongle to see if their driver had some virtualization issues, others have recording some virtualization limitations with bootcamp in terms of ms visual studeio development.

After further investigation and downloading what I hoped were the suitable drivers I have now COM3 & COM4 recognised both by the VM and the software I’m trying to run. The error I get is the usual “check connections” - which may well be a cable issue.

Hit a brick wall: I don't believe the connection issue is a problem with the cable ... I've tried 3 different cables (inc. FTDI) and all fail in the same way (Wll/UTM/iMac) but all work well when run natively on the iMac via CHIRP.
I think there's a fundamental problem somewhere ...

I have both the FTDI and the CH dongle connected and they show up as COM3 & COM4. However they fail with connection issues … I’ve a number of different dongle cables, each works natively but not in VM usage …
