Pages, Numbers, Keynote launch to Finder, not Choose a Template

When I open Pages, Numbers, or Keynote on my MacBook Pro, they first launch a Finder window, requiring an extra click on “New Document” before I can reach the “Choose a Template” screen. Since I rarely reopen existing files, this adds unnecessary clicks.

Is there a way to change the launch behavior so these apps skip the Finder window and open directly to the template chooser?

Although Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Saved to iCloud and disabling Pages on that panel used to revert Pages to opening a Template Chooser, the Pages design team in 15.2.1 decided that we need to click that New Document button to get at the Template chooser. The only alternative now is in the following paragraph…

Instead of clicking New Document, you can use cmd+N to remove the default File Chooser panel and replace it with the Template Chooser. Sort of bassackward, but the only alternative now.

There is a specific Provide Pages Feedback item on the Pages application menu that goes directly to that product team. Tell them to start using the product themselves so they will have some real world user understanding…

There is no setting within those apps to specifically trigger the opening of the Templates chooser at launch.

However, you may put "aliases" for your most commonly used templates into a folder placed at a convenient location, the Dock perhaps. From there you can directly open the template and the app.

Another option is to place any of these templates themselves in the Dock as a clickable icon.

You can google for the locations of the templates. I believe each app stores its pre-installed templates within the application bundle, and any user-created templates will reside somewhere in your user Library folder.

Yes. Do the following:

  1. Go to System Settings > Apple Account > iCloud
  2. Now click on the "Drive" icon
  3. At the bottom you'll see "Apps syncing to iCloud Drive". Click that.
  4. For each of those apps, turn off the checkbox.

It should now be fixed.

Curiously, changing this does not seem to impact those apps' usage of iCloud Drive in any way.

Also note that there are other places in System Settings, and in Apple Account, where there are very similar lists. Don't change those. Only change this one.

I found this recommendation in an older thread and tried it, but it no longer works. I’m not sure whether it only applied to older versions of the apps or if Apple has since closed the workaround. For reference, I’m using Pages 15.2.1, Numbers 15.2.1, and Keynote 15.2.1.
