iMessages sending as green RCS/SMS instead of iMessage

Out of nowhere last night, my iMessages are now being delivered as green RCS messages. I tried restarting my phone and nothing is working. When I toggle the RCS messages option, texts are now just sent as green SMS and not iMessage. My software etc are all up to date

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 26

Is this all iMessages to people you know have iPhones, rather than some (who may have iMessage off)?

Is this on both Wi-Fi and cellular data? If it’s on Wi-Fi only try restarting your router.

Did you make any changes since yesterday: iOS update, new app, updated apps?

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

iMessage periodically must register with an Apple server in the UK. This means you must have international messaging enabled.

Sometimes a message wasn’t delivered to the server, so try turning off iMessage, waiting about a minute, then turn it back on. This should send 2 messages to the server, one for each of these actions.

Hi thanks for your reply!

  • Yes, to everyone I know who has an iPhone that I've texted since yesterday when this started

  • Yes, both on wifi and cellular

  • no changes. I did update iOS after this started to see if it would help fix the issue but it had started before the update.

Also, no VPN. I am receiving iMessages on my Macbook so the issue is only on my phone.
