Reset Apple ID password on iPad without recovery phone number

Hi everyone,

I have a complex issue with my daughter's iPad relating to the AppleID that is currently signed in.

We don't know what the password is for the AppleID as my daughter has forgotten it and the recovery process wants to send a temporary password to a phone number that might be my daughter's old phone number from a few years ago (which we no longer have access too)

I have spoken to Apple Support over the phone and the only solution that they could offer me involved acquiring a copy of the proof of purchase for the iPad and then Apple could provide further assistance to access the AppleID for password reset purposes.

Does anyone know any other methods to reset an AppleID password without sending a password request to a phone number?

I am unable to acquire the proof of purchase for the iPad as the mother of my daughter was the one who purchased the iPad but she has sadly passed away 6 months ago so I can't provide those details to Apple.

Any other workarounds for resetting an AppleID password would be greatly appreciated as we are still trying to transfer my daughter's files and iTunes purchases to a new iPad.

Thank You!

You can reset the Apple ID password directly on the iPad using the device’s unlock passcode, provided the iPad is currently signed in to that account.

I am sorry to hear about the passing of your daughter's mother. Because the iPad is already logged into the Apple ID, you do not need the old password or the recovery phone number to change it.

How to Reset the Password on the iPad

  • Open the Settings app on the iPad.
  • Tap [your name] (your profile name at the top of the screen).
  • Tap Sign-In & Security.
  • Tap Change Password.
  • Enter the device passcode (the numbers your daughter uses to unlock the iPad screen).
  • Follow the on-screen steps to type and confirm a new password.
