How do I move iMovie projects without it converting to mp4

Ok this is really frustrating. Why does Apple make things so difficult, do they hate their user base?

The problem:

I’m trying to move a project in iMovie into my external drive but every time I try to do this it converts it to MP4 and I don’t want it to. I want to be able to move the entire project in an editable format (not closed)! any tips would be appreciated.

Hi,

An iMovie project in editable form cannot exist outside of an iMovie library.

So, you would need to create a new iMovie library and copy the editable iMovie project into it. Then you can move the library containing the project to the external drive. The external drive should be formatted mac os extended (journaled) or APFS.

To transfer the project to the new library, to the following: After creating the new library, go to the project browser screen (where your projects are displayed as icons) in your initial library. Do a File/Open Library/Other and open the newly created library. Then, in your initial library, find the project icon the you want to copy. To the right of the title below the icon there will be a little circle with 3 dots in it. Click on that and a drop down menu will appear with the option to copy the project to the new library.

Hmmmm. You need to have both libraries open in order for it to work.

Open your project. Then go to File/Open Library/Other and navigate to the new library that

you created. Click on the new library's icon. That will add the name of the new library to the

project sidebar of the old library. You will also see in the sidebar the name of the old library. So

you now have two libraries open. Go to the project browser of the old library. Next to the title of the project that

you want to copy, there will be a circle with three dots in it. Click on the circle. The drop down menu will contain the option to transfer to the newly created library.

Thanks Rich,

I’m afraid it didn’t work. The creation of the library worked, but not the moving or copying of the editable file.

it’s really frustrating because on my iPad it works fine. I can export the project in an editable format.

Apple products are so frustratingly difficult to use and are not consistent with each other…

I might have to move my complete ecosystem back to Windows as Apple has not yet matured enough for me to manage my projects effectively.

once again, thanks for your advice
