Apple Watch: Can it use a different carrier than iPhone?

Because I haven't yet been kicked off my family phone plan and I’ve had weird service issued with my current carrier, I thought I’d buy my watch standalone with a different carrier. After the fact without any obvious indication, I found out I have to have the same carrier. I’m so confused/frustrated because apparently I have to have it on the same carrier. I know theres family sharing and that maybe I can get around the issue that way, but if I were setting it up for a family member or child, Id probably add them to my plan. It didn’t even occur to me it would be an issue because all the major carriers offer standalone plans so to me it makes no sense why the plans would exist then. I tried the support chat and it was basically no help. If anyone knows a way around this issue, id really appreciate it because i have a contract for service and cant get out of it. Thanks!

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 26

Short answer is that you have to add the Apple Watch to your iPhone plan for a small fee. In the U.S. it is typically $10 per month add to your iPhone plan.

The carrier MUST support the Apple Watch. Not all carriers support the Apple Watch.

A GPS only Apple Watch (or a cellular Apple Watch that does not have an eSIM) can be paired with an iPhone and do everything an activated cellular Apple Watch AS LONG AS the iPhone is nearby. The Apple Watch just uses the iPhone’s radios.

If you want to use a degraded Apple Watch, you can treat it as if it belongs to a child. That mode can use a different carrier that supports the Apple Watch Family Plan. But many of the Apple Watch features are disabled.

Some limitations: Cannot receive SMS/MMS messages, as that depends on a fully paired iPhone. Messaging is pretty much limited to Apple’s Messages, unless the messaging service provides an Apple Watch app. Alarms, alerts, notifications on the iPhone are not sent to the Apple Watch. Apple Pay via a credit card is not available. Also not available: Medications, respiratory rate, irregular heart rhythm notifications, ECG, AFib History, Cycle Tracking, Sleep, Wrist Temperature, Blood Oxygen, Walking Steadiness, Audiobooks, Camera Remote, News, Shortcuts, and the double tap gesture.

  • "Make sure you have an eligible cellular service plan with a supported carrier. Your iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier,* and you must be within your carrier's network when you set up cellular on your watch."

If anyone knows a way around this issue ... Clearly based on the Apple article above there is no way to get around this.
