Mouse freezes after macOS Tahoe 26.5 / 26.5.1 update on Mac mini (Both Wired and Wireless)

Hi everyone,

I am having a frustrating issue with my Mac mini after updating the OS and I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem or knows a workaround.

Two days ago, I installed the macOS Tahoe 26.5 update. Immediately upon booting up, my mouse completely stopped working. The cursor was entirely frozen right in the middle of the screen. I had to force restart the Mac mini using the physical power button, and after that, the mouse started working again temporarily.

Thinking it might be a known bug, I went ahead and installed the macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 patch. However, a new issue appeared: every time the screen goes to sleep or the screensaver kicks in, the mouse completely dies.

To isolate the issue, I tested different hardware. I normally use a wireless Logitech G305, but the issue persists even when I connect a standard wired USB mouse. I have tried unplugging and replugging them, but nothing works. The only way to get any mouse back to life is by doing a hard reset using the power button.

Since downgrading to the previous macOS version is not an option for me right now, I am a bit stuck.

  • Has anyone else encountered this mouse freeze bug after the recent Tahoe updates?
  • Is there any known fix or setting I can tweak to prevent the USB/wireless mouse from freezing after the screensaver or display sleep?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT - below I wrote that the application is free, but that is not correct.

You have this "Mac Mouse Fix.app", which from a quick search appears to be a third party free mouse driver.

I am not familiar with it, but given that you are having problems with the mouse, it stands out as a very likely suspect.

  [Running] sm_launchd.plist (Noah Nuebling - installed 2025-12-31)
Executable: /Applications/Mac Mouse Fix.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/Mac Mouse Fix Helper.app/Contents/MacOS/Mac Mouse Fix Helper
    Location: /Applications/Mac Mouse Fix.app

Start your mac in Safe Mode.

In Finder, press Command-Shift-G and paste

/Library/LaunchAgents/sm_launchd.plist

Drag the file to the trash.

Also drag the application to the trash (it lives in /Applications).

Restart normally and test.

This could be due to a conflict with the Logitech mouse driver. Yes, that could affect even a different mouse (in case you are wondering).

You could try uninstalling it, or updating, if an update is available.

I think that the mouse itself can work without a driver.

If you are unsure: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.

We can see from the report what third party drivers or extensions are installed, and maybe spot some other possible source of problems.

I am in the middle of a huge work project with a mouse that is freezing, acting on its own, dragging open applications. This is a nightmare! WTH Apple?

Let me guess: you have a third party mouse (probably Logitech). Check that the drivers are up to date, or uninstall any third party mouse driver completely (most mice just work without any driver, anyway).

By the way, blaming the driver isn’t a fix. Apple updates shouldn't break drivers.
shut down my VPN

Logitech devices and their drivers have been flagged for several recent versions of MacOS by users here for conflicts with the OS. Third party vendors are responsible for keeping their products and drivers compatible with the latest MacOS, they get those MacOS updates way in advance for that reason. Apple doesn't break drivers, but some vendors don't test properly or let their products get out of date.

There are thousands upon thousands of peripherals that connect to Macs (drives, printers, keyboards, mouse, video equipment, cameras, card readers, speakers ... what not) and Apple does not test every system update with every single one of those. Instead Apple releases its new OS versions in advance and normally vendors test and make updates if they have some custom code that doesn't meet Apple's published specifications.

And VPN are generally not advised, they also conflict with many things. The only time VPN should be used is to access a secure and closed network, as provided by an employer, school, or financial institution. Otherwise VPN provide a false sense of security, as the VPN operators can see and access all network traffic and it has been discovered that they sell the data (your data) for a profit. Shutting down a VPN does not disable pieces of it from running in the background.

After updating to macOS Tahoe 26.5, the Karabiner background options were disabled (Background Activity, etc). I am going to try enabling them now to see if that fixes it. Thanks.

Interesting, the only mention of Karabiner - Elements from the Report, is as a Crash 33 times

And no where else

I failed to mention, I was at 26.5 when observing this, and it didn’t start immediately. And, after reboot, both items worked OK for a while.
I uninstalled anything new and shut down my VPN, which I had just begun using again. Same problem.
Installed 26.5.1. So far so good. We’ll see if it shows up again.

Coincident with Tahoe 26.5.1
