Because a Chromebook cannot create an iPhone or iPad backup, it cannot be used to restore an iOS device from a backup. Likewise, a Chromebook cannot perform a factory restore of an iOS device because it does not support the Apple software and services required to download and reinstall iOS from Apple.

On an iPhone, the word “restore” can mean two different things depending on the context:

Restore from Backup: Restore all content to iPhone from a backup

  • This means putting your device back into the state it was in when the backup was made.
  • It brings back your apps, settings, photos, messages, Screen Time rules, and other personal data.
  • It’s like rewinding your phone to a snapshot of your life at that moment.

Restore to Factory Settings: Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod to factory settings using ...

  • This wipes everything from the device and reinstalls a clean version of iOS.
  • It removes all personal data, apps, and settings, leaving the phone as if it were brand new.
  • Often used for troubleshooting major issues or preparing the phone for resale.

In short:

  • Restore from backup = recover your personal content and settings.
  • Restore to factory settings = erase everything and start fresh with a clean system.
