Homepod volume turning down on it's own

I have two Homepod's. I reported a problem of the volume fading out and then coming back to the original volume. I tried many things with support and then they gave up. They said this is a software issue (I'm guessing).

That problem has stopped and now the volume just turns down on it's own. My wife said it turned up once after it turned down but, I have not had that happen. It will randomly turn down all the way and stay down. It will also turn down a little and then stay there. Eventually it will turn down all the way. This happens on anything playing on the Homepods. I am very disappointed in Apple because they say they are not responsible and if it is them, wait for a fix? I have had many annoying issues with the Homepods and Apple does nothing. The last time I was on the phone with a support person, they passed me to their supervisor? I wondered why and found out that this is the way Apple now ends support for Homepods, passing to a manager that says, ya they don't work, what do you want me to do? They are out of support!

Possible fix for HomePods randomly saying “Here’s some music for you” and starting Apple Music or changing volume.

I had two HomePod (2nd gen) speakers that would randomly say “Here’s some music for you” and start playing Apple Music. This even happened when nobody was home.

I tried almost everything:

  • Factory reset
  • Removing and re-adding the HomePods to Home
  • Breaking and recreating the stereo pair
  • Signing the HomePod account in/out
  • Disabling Apple Music in Home
  • Disabling Siri
  • Reconfiguring Apple TV

None of those steps fixed it.

What finally seems to have solved it was enabling Accessibility → Touch Accommodations on both HomePods with these settings:

  • Touch Accommodations: On
  • Hold Duration: 3.9 seconds
  • Ignore Repeat: On (0.1 s)
  • Tap Assistance: Off

After enabling those settings, I gradually restored my normal setup:

  • recreated the stereo pair,
  • set them as the default Apple TV speakers,
  • used them with Airfoil,
  • streamed simultaneously with a B&W Zeppelin,
  • re-enabled “Hey Siri”.

Everything has remained stable since. It has now been running normally without any spontaneous Siri activations or random music playback.

I can’t prove this is the root cause, but after changing only one variable at a time, Touch Accommodations is the only change that consistently correlated with the problem disappearing. Hopefully this helps someone else.

Hello Jim,

I have been working with Apple support after installing 26.5 and I started having this issue before my issue was volume fading out and then back in (about 15 seconds). After weeks of the volume turning down it now has the volume turning up to full volume. This is very random but, very consistent. On the occasion the volume will turn down but it mostly turns up now. I just received an email from Support this morning and they claim to have a fix for this issue that will be pushed out soon. I'm not sure how you can have a version that is not released yet?

Today is June 21st 2026 and I was just told a fix is on the way.

Please let me know how you have that version of the software, I would like the fix too.

There are beta versions of HomePod software both for OS 26.6 and OS 27 that are currently being tested and that may be what Apple was referring to. Personally I would not recommend installing either of these beta software versions unless you have the patience and spare devices where you are dedicated to being a beta tester and participate with the Feedback process.

Currently I am on the release version of 26.5 and don't experience any trouble with the volume going up or down on that version, so if Apple found an issue in unique cases where that has occurred and fixed it in one of those beta versions, then they will be released after thorough testing both by them and others who are participating in the beta program.

Thanks for the update! Glad to here that Apple emailed you with a fix that is on the way to the problem you had reported to them, which is much different then the conclusion in your initial post that support has ended for the HomePods.

I'll give those setting a try. I was told by two support people that the issue I am having is fixed in the next release. I installed the latest 26.6. The third support person said there is no fix?

I have a HomePod pair. I have seen one working better after the update. When I pair them the problem of volume going up to full, going down to no sound and mute being set for 10 - 30 seconds is still there. Playing music or podcasts randomly during the middle of the night also continued.

I set the suggestions you have. I'll add the other HomePod and cross my fingers this will help.

Apple makes it difficult to get help with random issues. Support wants to be on the phone. After being on the phone about 10 time and the support person seeing (video taken) and hearing this go on about 4 times while he was online. They always want to install software, the problem stops after the install and reboot. When the problem starts again a day or days later, they can't get the information to solve the problem. The support person also said they don't think this is a software issue but, would not say what they think it is?

I hope it's the setting you are suggesting. Thanks
