iPad 3 (A1430) activation fails after restore

I have an iPad 3rd Generation Wi-Fi + Cellular (Model A1430).

The iPad was stuck on the activation screen with the message:

"Activation could not be completed. Please restore the iPad and install the latest version of iPadOS and attempt activation again."

What I have already tried:

  • Connected the iPad to a Mac.
  • Restored the iPad completely using Finder in Recovery Mode.
  • Installed the latest supported iOS version successfully.
  • Connected to a working Wi-Fi network.
  • Tried activation multiple times.
  • Apple Check Coverage recognizes the device correctly and shows it as a valid iPad 3 (A1430).
  • Finder and macOS detect the iPad normally over USB.

The restore completes successfully with no errors, but activation still fails with the same message.

Has anyone seen this on an iPad 3 A1430 before? Could this indicate a baseband/cellular hardware failure, or is there another way to diagnose the activation issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

Multiple recent posts, concerning unresolvable issues with re-activation, suggest that Apple has finally removed all server-side and re-activation support for obsolete 32-bit devices:

  • iPad1
  • iPad2
  • iPad3
  • iPad4
  • iPad mini1

As such re-activation of your iPad3 may now be impossible, rendering the iPad unusable.

Additionally, all 32-bit Apps have been retired and removed from the Apple App Store. Other than built-in Apps, you'll not be able to install any additional Apps from the App Store.

The final nail in the coffin is simply that most online services will now be unusable with the native Safari browser - as obsolete 32-bit devices don't meet the security requirements and crypto' requirements of modern websites.

In summary, while perhaps an unexpected outcome, you might be best advised to abandon ongoing efforts to recover your obsolete iPad3. You would be best advised to consider outright replacement with much newer or current model devices.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of potentially unwanted news.
