Keynote: Embedded YouTube video layering issue

How to cover a section of an embedded Youtube video?

I used the "add web video" tool to embed a Youtube video. I placed a rectangle shape on top of the video, to cover part of the video. The video is the bottom layer. However, when I play the Keynote slides, the embedded video appears as the top layer.

Why doesn't the video respect the object layer hierarchy?

In Keynote, web-embedded YouTube videos are rendered by a system player element that always forces itself to the absolute foreground during playback. Because of this structural limitation, standard shape layers placed on top cannot block or cover a live web video.

How to Fix or Work Around the Issue

  • Download the video file: Save the YouTube clip locally to your Mac using an online downloader or tool.
  • Insert as a standard movie: Delete the web embed and go to Insert > Choose (or drag and drop the local video file onto your slide).
  • Use layer hierarchy normally: Local video files respect object layers, allowing your rectangle shape to cleanly cover portions of the video.
  • Trim if needed: Use the Movie tab in the Format sidebar to crop or trim the specific section of the video you want to show.
