Old USB-C flash drive won't fit into the USB-C port on my Mac Studio

An old USB-C flash drive will not seat into the USB-C port on my newest computer. Newer USB-C flash drives work fine. Other than trying each USB-C component to see if it works, there seems to be no way to tell which ones will work. So much for USB-C compatibly. Have we entered a USB-C nightmare?

Other than trying to fit a mismatched connection type such as Micro-USB/Lightning or debris in the connector, I have only seen that reported with poor quality cables that are not compliant with the USB-C specs. You can find 99 cent cables at Amazon with very poor reviews including trouble with the connector not fitting properly and although you are referring to a USB Flash drive I suspect the same would be true there.
