How to restore a single Note on MacBook Air either via TimeMachine or some other method?

I have been backing up my MacBookAir using the Time Machine app for ages. I finally needed it to restore a note which had key information accidentally deleted (in the ”Notes” app). Imagine my surprise when I could not figure out how to access Notes on any of the backups! I looked here for help, and they gave instructions to go to

” ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes ”, but I don’t see Notes listed there, either (see attached picture).

Can someone please provide simplified instructions as to how to restore the lost note without overwriting the entire Notes files altogether?

MacBook Air 15″, macOS 26.5

Notes are stored in a sqlite database. They re not stored as individual files. You would need to restore the whole database to extract the missing note data.

In order to avoid side effects, restore the whole ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes folder. I would also recommend that you disconnect completely your Mac from the internet when you restore the folder, this to avoid synchronization issues with iCloud.

Once you recover the missing note (you'll have to export/copy it someplace else), restore the whole folder with your latest Time Machine backup and reconnect to the internet.

Edit: quit Notes before restoring from Time Machine.
