Image Playground: 'Downloading support' error on iPhone/iPad

Help Needed with ”Downloading support for Image Playground …”

I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

My iOS, 26.5, is up to date.

Image Playground was working fine up until yesterday (June 9, 2026).

I have tried multiple Google Gemini search suggested fixes, all to no avail:

  • Apple Intelligence > toggling off and on
  • Apple Intelligence > changing the language/region (I’m already in the United States)
  • Apple Intelligence > Talk & Type to Siri: OFF; Press Side Button for Siri: ON
  • force restarting the phone
  • General > iPhone Storage > Playground: 20.5 MB (WAY higher than normal) > Offload App + reinstall
  • deleting and reinstalling the app
  • turning Cellular OFF
  • going to Messages and trying Genmoji from there (same message)

This is happening with my iPad Pro (12.9 inch; 5th generation; iOS up to date).

Another family member is having the same issue with her device(s).

Previous threads on this same problem, dating back to 2024, have been closed, with no option to reply.

When you mentioned two Macs (I had only tried my iPhone and iPad Pro; I hadn't even thought about my iMac), I started down the Google Gemini fixes path, only for Mac. I started to get the same suggestions. Then I clarified to Gemini that I was experiencing the same problem with my iPhone and iPad Pro, that another family member was experiencing the same issue with her device(s), and that others outside the household were experiencing this as well. Here's what popped up (oddly enough, from the Apple Support Community:

On June 8, 2026, Apple officially announced major WWDC 2026 updates to Image Playground (including new photorealistic generation tools). When Apple updated the backend asset models on their servers to prepare for these new features, it caused the asset delivery network to break globally for existing iOS 26.5 and macOS Tahoe users, trapping everyone's apps in a "Downloading Support" loop.

From Reddit:

The Permanent Fix

According to Apple Support communications regarding this specific June 9 glitch, Apple is aware that the background asset packages are failing to download on the current public software. Apple is tracking this bug and is currently preparing a minor point update (iOS 26.5.2 / macOS 26.5.2) expected to drop very soon to completely restore the backend server paths.
