Check your sales receipt.

  • If the card doesn’t appear on your sales receipt, that usually means the card was never activated at purchase.
  • If the card appears on your sales receipt, then that usually means that the funds were already used.

Contact Apple Support with the receipt and serial number; only they can verify the card’s activation status and help resolve the issue.

A card that shows zero balance is one that has already been redeemed. Not sure why you were told that could mean it was not activated because if that was the case you would have received the Card is not activated message as seen here:

Katana-San is right and you were probably a victim of a scam that occurred right in the store where you purchased it. I am pretty confident this was done on a rack where the retailer displays it in a location where anyone can tamper with them. Ironically some of these same stores will lock up products where theft will cause them to lose money, but they don't have the same concern when it is their customers that are losing money. Only buy Gift Cards from Apple directly or a retailer that secures them behind a counter.

How you proceed will be known after contacting Apple directly. Stores are responsible for securing the products they sell so it may be the case that you have to escalate the issue with that Store Manager, District Manager, or Corporate Office.
