Prioritize iOS Live Captioning for deaf users

Live Captioning IOS27

I am deaf and I use the Live Caption feature every day. It is amazing and helps me understand what is being said. However, I am disappointed that Apple seems to be focusing more on generated subtitles.

I have researched the difference between Live Captions and generated subtitles. Generated subtitles are typically added to videos after they are recorded; they are not live, and they are often geared more toward hearing users than deaf users. I contacted the Apple Accessibility Team to share my concerns about this.

Apple should improve Live Captions rather than focusing on generated subtitles. I asked Siri about this, and the response was: "The primary difference between live captions and generated subtitles lies in their timing, purpose, and the way they are created. Live captions are generated in real-time during a live event, meeting, or broadcast to provide immediate accessibility. Generated subtitles, on the other hand, are typically created after a video has been recorded, allowing them to be edited, timed, and reviewed before the content is published."

I think iOS 27, with its AI capabilities, can help make Live Captioning even better—especially when it comes to captioning live audio with background sounds. I hope Apple understands the needs of deaf users when it comes to Live Captions!

There is no reason to believe that the available live captioning (which already includes the ability to caption live conversations) described here:

... will do anything but get better, provided you are using hardware that supports advanced AI features.

Duck search assist says:

To access the advanced AI features of Siri, you need an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air, as these devices have the necessary RAM (12GB) to utilize the most powerful on-device model, known as Apple Foundation Models (AFM) Core Advanced. Other iPhones, like the iPhone 15 Pro, can run iOS 27 but will not have access to these advanced features.

iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and older models back to iPhone 11 do not appear to have the required RAM to support these features.
