Tahoe UI system setting crash when selecting custom screen saver.

Morning

Tahoe UI problem.

I have a new (very new Mac Neo) less than two weeks old.

I have discovered I am unable to select any option in the costume screen saver setting (my photos) as the option window will not load, opens blank with only a ok button, system settings then crashes.

Have attempted safe mode with no luck just see the same problem.

see attached screen shot.

All up to date running Tahoe 26.5.1 chip A18 pro, 8GB ram.

I did wonder if it was a screen resolution problem but no did the same thing.

A quick way to test if this is a System Wide issue or possible a User Account issue would setup a New User Account

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Then log out of the Main User Account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

Report back

You mentioned getting into the Console logs

That may have seemed a good idea back in the times of Snow Leopard released on August 28, 2009

Be assured, most of what appears in Console Logs is basically Software Engineers taking to each other is languages only they may understand

I have heard, even they would have to run the logs through a special software only they have access to in oder to translate the logs into something readable

The upstart being

Do not waste your valuable time reading the logs

Please help us help you. Do you mean the "custom" screen saver?

If som please do System Settings > Display and look for Refresh Rate.:

If that option is present, please tell us its current setting and what options are offered by clicking the arrows. I do not know if a NEO will have the same Display options as the Macbook Pro from which I made the screen shot.

On other Mac laptops, there have been issues with the Apple animated screensavers if Refresh rate is set to other than 60 Hertz. There may be a correlation with that glitch which appeared with, I recall, 26.4 and has not been fixed.

People have also reported issues with their images from Photos not fitting the screen. However, I've not seen that associated with a crash,

Ok so logged in a the Admin account and behold it worked fine, I can see the options I expected.

Would the easiest option be to create another new Account? and delete the old (thou I don't really want to do that) and it not like I change much on the account that has the problem, screen, res dark mode (reset the screen res does not work)

Is there an account repair option. I have a external HD to with more then enough space to clone the NEO and unmount the local HD for repair (thou admit will need to do some reading about that)

The fact all works as expected in the alternative account and not as expected in the Original User Account

This confirms there is something installed in the original user account that is playing up and causing issues

What I would suggestion and this is purely optional but still suggested

To avoid a game of 20 questions

Install the below application into the problematic User Account

Download the Application Etrecheck  ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid for added features.

Good Day @ Mr_7_Hanks

At one time there was an  Etrecheck Application available on the Apple Apps Store.

Due to certain constrains place upon the Developer by APPLE, the developer chose to remove it from the Store and make is available Directly from them.

This specific application is well known,  on these Forums,  as a Go To for trouble shooting and avoiding all the question / answer and question / answer to finally get the issue pinned down.

It is also known and reported by Reliable Sources that,  sometimes APPLE SUPPORT has invoked using this same Developer Distributed Version of Etrecheck application to trouble shot computer issues

Lastly - should you decide to use and post the Report now or at a later time, we are willing to have a very close look and offer some insights

Thank you. Mmm is this Etrecheck app really safe ? Saying I have not installed much.

I have observed, once logged back into my standard account and reverted to default screen res the option for the screen saver appeared.

Then next day checked again and nope back to not showing the options.

I now wonder if it is because i am using a standard account thou i see no options to switch on and off some personal settings for the standard account other then use password to change system settings which i did not tick.

I wonder if creating another standard account will shed some light on it.
