iPad Pro M4 Face ID failure, ₹90,000 replacement cost

Title: iPad Pro M4 Face ID Hardware Failure After 17 Months – Apple Wants ₹90,000 for Replacement

Hello Apple Community,

I am a resident of Uttar Pradesh, India, and I am looking for advice regarding a Face ID hardware failure on my iPad Pro 11-inch (M4, Wi-Fi, 256 GB).

My iPad was purchased in November 2024 and worked perfectly until April 2026, when Face ID suddenly stopped working. The failure occurred during normal use.

Important facts about the device:

• Never dropped

• Never bent

• Never exposed to water or liquid

• Never repaired or opened by any third party

• Always used with a high-quality protective case and screen protector

• All other functions continue to work normally

I contacted Apple Support and spent a considerable amount of time troubleshooting the issue under ***. Eventually, I was referred to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The authorized service center inspected the iPad and confirmed that:

• Face ID has a hardware failure

• No external damage affecting Face ID was found

• Face ID cannot be repaired separately

• The only offered solution is a whole-unit replacement

• The quoted replacement cost is approximately ₹90,000

I have already spoken with Apple Support, including a Senior Advisor/Senior Consultant team. I requested a goodwill exception or a reduced-cost replacement, but both requests were declined.

What I find difficult to understand is that the device failed during normal use, has no history of accidental damage, and yet the only available solution costs nearly as much as purchasing another iPad.

I understand that community members cannot authorize repairs or replacements. However, I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced a similar Face ID hardware failure on an iPad or iPhone.

Has anyone found another option, received a different resolution, or successfully escalated a similar case?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have applecare+ and I had this exact problem, and I went to the Apple Store and ran diagnostics and it showed FACEID is not working. They ordered the TrueDepth camera part along with a replacement IPAD M4 in the event they flubbed up the repair. nevertheless 3 days later Apple called me and said they successfully repaired my IPAD. Apparently the M4 and M5 Ipads aren't soldered parts, intentionally manfactured this way to cut down on just handing off new IPADs for broken ones, carbon type of enviornmental pledge stuff. Anyways, My IPAD is now working. I'm so happy I had Applecare, otherwise they woulda charged 60% the cost of the IPAD alone. Not worth it in my opinion.

One morning I woke up and tried to unlock My iPad M4. It failed to detect Face ID. So I reset the Face ID and tried to re-set up, it failed to detect the face. After googling I found out, TrueDepth sensor has stopped working, tried clicking portrait pic, viewfinder is stuck in portrait mode. This happened to me 2 weeks ago. I purchased my device in July 2024. Many people are suggesting that should have purchased apple care but that also covers 24 months warranty, and mine stopped working in 26th months. And suddenly in last one month many people have reported this issue. How is this consumers fault?

It’s not uncommon for FaceID to fail on its own, with no other symptoms. Most often its a hardware failure of the TruDepth camera or the IR emitters that scan the face.

Recoverable problems can be a case that blocks the camera or IR emitters or a screen protector.

Solely as an example, here is the Apple documentation for repairing the TrueDepth camera system on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Not because this iPhone documentation is useful for an iPad Pro — it is not! — but because this documentation shows the parts and warnings involved for servicing the TrueDepth camera hardware:

The images shown are from the back side of the iPhone too, with the back glass removed. You're here looking at the back side of the TrueDepth camera system.

As for the original question, and with no AppleCare coverage, the available options are to pay for the repair, or replace the iPad, or operate the iPad without Face ID.

Exactly, i have the same issue with my ipad, mine stopped working around the starting of May this year and my ipad is working perfectly fine otherwise and there isnt any physical damage either!! I don’t want to get a whole unit replacement, why can’t apple just repair this part? It seems like a manufacturing defect, literally not a consumers fault!

Of course, the iPad is out of warranty, and apparently you don't have Apple Care or some other extended warranty. It seems like this is what you agreed to when you bought the iPad.

I'm not sure that Face ID would be important enough for me for its failure to cause me to buy a new iPad. I think that I would just type in my code.

Because the cost of repairing almost anything is more than the cost of replacement. If you had had the foresight to purchase AppleCare when you got the device Apple would just replace your iPad. You made a gamble that the iPad would never need service and you lost the bet. It happens when you gamble; sometimes you lose.

And no, it isn’t a manufacturing defect; those appear almost immediately. It is a random failure with no specific cause. Stuff happens.

This Apple support guidance tells us about when and if there is an alert for the face id been disabled but the thing is I went to an apple genius bar and they couldn’t tell me what was wrong with it they told me when they ran the diagnostics everything was fine so doesn’t it mean its a software problem rather than a hardware problem although it might get fixed after replacing the component itself but the problem first arrived when the ipad was updated
