New iPhone 17e has bugs and changing settings

I just got a new iPhone 17e from Apple store and within days it’s already being buggy and weird with settings changing themselves. Has anyone else has these issues?

  • Although I turned off keyboard typing sounds, they turned themselves on randomly (while typing a URL into Safari address bar) then after 5 minutes of browsing in Safari they turned themselves back off while entering another address
  • While browsing Reddit, I clicked on a post, and instead of that post opening, Guardian news site opened. I do read that site but don’t understand why it opened. I went back to Reddit to try opening that post again, in case it had an embedded link or something, and was able to open that post and didn’t see any links within it
  • the font for the time on the Lock Screen changed itself
  • the Password app icon, which was on my home page, suddenly duplicated itself and now there are two next to each other though I don’t recall adding the second one
  • Apple said I cannot share location with apps since I’m in lockdown mode… then I got a pop up asking me if I wanted to share my location with app, which I was able to do successfully without turning off Lockdown mode
  • Auto correct of words isn’t working properly and replaces the right word with a wrong one sometimes. For example, while writing this post, it replaced “didn’t” with “disnt” and replaced ”example” with “exampl” after I hit space bar. I spelled both words correctly the first time

If it matters, I’m using lockdown mode and i have Apple Intelligence turned off. Are these bugs or is my phone hacked or something?

Have you performed a Force Restart?

  • Press and quickly release Volume Up
  • Press and quickly release Volume Down
  • Press and HOLD side button until the Apple logo appears. This may take up to 15 seconds while holding the Side button before you will see the Apple logo and you have to ignore anything else on the screen during that time including the prompt to Slide to Power Off. If you don't see the Apple logo, try again as it may take a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence of the key presses correct.

What iOS version are you using? It should be iOS 26.5.1.

I also have an iPhone 17e and can address each of those issues:

  • Keyboard sounds - Have not experienced the clicks going on and off. I typically have mine on, but turned them off to test and have yet seen where the clicks were heard, although I only spent 10 minutes testing before posting here.
  • Browsing Reddit - Lockdown Mode will affect website browsing. Initially clicking a link may open that page in a new tab where briefly your previous page/home page will appear. Lockdown mode may have prevented that link from opening the site, but the behavior should have been consistent unless there was a brief network connection issue.
  • Font on Lock Screen - Have not seen the font change unless I have specifically changed it. If you changed your Wallpaper that may also change the font used on the Lock Screen.
  • Duplicate Password App - The Force Restart will resolve that issue if it was due to a cache issue after the device was set up.
  • Location Sharing - Lockdown mode does not prevent Location Sharing with apps, it does prevent some location sharing features that may be used by an App. You can view the apps you have granted permission for Location Services by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. This is different than the Tracking setting where an App is allowed to track you.
  • For Auto correct not working correctly, reset the dictionary at Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. If you restored from a backup, it may have brought in some corrupted data. I am using the English(US) dictionary, and that will make a difference on the words corrected with Auto-Correct.

  • Is your phone hacked? No
  • Does Lockdown Mode interfere with many normal operations? Absolutely, it is designed that way.
  • Are these bugs? Not able to duplicate on my iPhone 17e, but if you have got a corrupted iOS install you may want to Factory reset your device and would recommend using a computer so the OS will be reinstalled.

On an iPhone, no action occurs unless initiated by the device’s user.

If you feel an unauthorized person/app is remotely using, controlling or monitoring your device, then that is possible only if you have done one or more of the following Don'ts...

  1. Don't hand over an iPhone to kids or to a stranger without Enabling Guided Access
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jailbreak
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device
  5. Don't give in to Phishing
  6. Don't plug in your device in Airports and Public places through third-party cables and trust the device. Beware of Juice Jacking. (Especially in India)
  7. Don't leave your iPhone unlocked and unattended in public places like offices, schools, malls, etc.

If one of the above is true then quickly change the Apple ID Password and Return iPhone settings to their defaults.

There is no feature that allows remote control of a device using the Apple Account, but data stored in iCloud can be changed remotely and synced back to your device.

For example, If you use iCloud Photos and someone using another device signed into your account or accessed iCloud on the web, they could delete or add photos to your iCloud account. Those changes will then automatically update on your device when they are synced. This may look like someone accessed your device, but that is not what happened there and they actually have no access to your device, it is your Apple Account, and the data is set to sync to your device.

To prevent unauthorized access to your Apple Account, make sure you have Two Factor Authentication turned on. That way even if they know your Password, they still will not be able to access your account from an untrusted device without a Verification Code sent to you.

Thanks, but I’m not comfortable with the amount of information they say is shared when I submit reports. I would hope Apple can offer other solutions, such as visiting the Genius Bar, that don’t require doing that.

The Feedback Assistant is intended for Developers anyway who are testing the beta releases of software. Not sure why they told you to use it when you have not said you are using beta software.. That is why it tells you the Feedback Assistant is installed when you have enrolled in the Beta Program and addresses the users as Deverlopers or Teams.

For Feedback to send to Apple that is not related to beta software or being a Developer, Apple provides this link. You can still issue bug reports here under Feedback Type or a range of other options.

I didn’t do any of the above things. Nonetheless, what I wrote in my original post is true.

I tried changing my password today but it says I can’t right now because Stolen Device Protection is on. I just changed the password a few days ago. Even if someone did have my password, would that grant them the ability to remotely control this device? I would hope not.

The password was changed recently anyway, about 2 weeks ago.

Following service in this thread, I reset the keyboard and did a forced restart and will see if any of this behavior returns. Nonetheless, I’d like to find an explanation for what’s happening because I’m losing trust in the safety, security and reliability of this device.

Stolen Device protection is now turned on by default with the later releases of iOS automatically. You probably received a software update after you changed the Password last time.

Stolen Device Protection default is on after update

You can still turn it off if you wish or add additional biometric features for even more security.
