Updates needed for delivery apps without payment information

Hello~ Throw a new iPhone in the trash and buy a new Android…hmmm. Doesn’t sound like a money problem to me. You will need to add a payment method…period. It doesn’t mean you will be charged.

The ability to update your delivery apps requires a functioning payment method.

A payment method is often required to verify your identity, prevent fraud and ensure a streamlined process if you decide to make in-app purchases or purchase paid apps later.

It also helps companies manage age restrictions and regional content availability.

Check your payment method in Settings ➢ [your name] ➢ Payment & Shipping, ensure it’s valid and update if needed. Also, sign out and back into your Apple Account, then try again.

If it still fails, contact Apple Support directly.

Nothing comes out of your account unless you make a purchase, and that requires your strict authorization to approve that charge. If you have a previous charge that failed to process, maybe due to lack of funds, of course you are expected to pay that amount before you are allowed to continue and use the App Store for any reason.

I am sure if you made a delivery to a customer and they did not pay you, that you would not continue to make deliveries when that have not even paid the amount you were owed previously. That is just smart business.

Adding a card does not mean you are charged anything to download apps, unless you do have a previous charge that your have still not paid for. Review the information here:

It's not a "new" restriction. A payment method has been required to use the App Store to download or update apps pretty much since the inception of the App Store. And spoiler alert, Android has pretty much the same requirement. Plus, we don't care if you throw your phone away, nor what phone you choose to buy.

Apple is not going to rethink this, so either add a payment method, which doesn't mean you'll be charged for anything unless you choose to buy something or don't. But if you don't, you won't be able to update apps or download new ones.
