It is perfectly normal for the Power Adapter to become very warm while charging a connected device. That said, it should not become uncomfortably hot to touch.
The first generation iPad Air was supplied with an Apple 12W Power Adapter with a USB Type-A connection - along with a USB Type-A to Lightning charging cable. Apple now only supplies Power Adapters with a USB-C connection.
Any Apple USB-C Power Adapter will be suitable to charge your iPad Air1 - although anything greater than 20W will offer no benefit. If using a USB-C Power Adapter, you will require a Lightning to USB-C charging cable:

Already outlined within my earlier reply.
Legislation in many countries/regions has mandated manufacturers to move to USB-C Power Adapters and cables - and for this reason, Apple no longer manufacturers or sells Power Adapters with USB Type-A connections.
When using a USB-C Power Adapter, you must also replace your existing charging cable with a Lightning to USB-C charging cable:
The original iPad Air only needs 10 watts, but there are no 10 watt chargers around anymore, so this is your best bet.
Buy 20W USB-C Power Adapter - Apple
THIRD TRY: Get a USB-C power adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable.
Get the cable Lotus Pilot suggested and a USB-C 20 watt power source.
Hi,
please accept my sincere apology, I have a couple of iPads.
the charger that keeps getting hot is an original charger that I bought with an iPad Air.
it is getting hot when trying to charge a 9th series iPad.
I am using the charger to charge my 9th series and my 7th series.
They both have USB- lightening connections but because Apple have stopped supplying USB- lightening connections, I’m not sure how to get around this.
Hi Lotus Pilot,
thanks for your help, but the connection on the iPad 9th and 7th series have lightening connections but, so it wouldn’t fit. I’m wondering if it could be the charger or the iPad battery.

Both of my previous replies explain that you will need to replace your existing charging cable - and provide a direct link to a suitable cable.
I have now purchased a 20w charger and a lightening connection cable as you said.
i am very sorry that it must have been very frustrating for you as I kept repeating the same question when I should have done so. Immediately. It has taken me hours today to get the payment authorised because of a mix up with a new card that I have just received.
thank you for your help, I do apologise.

You are very welcome. No apology required; it was my pleasure to assist.
I am delighted that, with appropriate guidance, you now have a working solution.
Hi, I am sorry I seem to have got you frustrated trying to help me. I have now bought a charger and a cable with a lightening connection.
i do appreciate your help, the link you sent me was a 2 pin.
thank you once again
Hi, I am thinking about the advice you gave me and will do as you suggested.
