iPhone XR Podcasts app issues after iOS 18.7.9 update

I appear to have ran into a bit of a problem after updating my iPhone XR to iOS 18.7.9

It all started with not being able to download the Uber app without updating my phones OS despite having auto updates on. I manually started the update and assumed that'd be that. I downloaded uber but it still refused to connect saying 'something went wrong'. I ended up using Lyft which worked fine despite uber having problems, so I didn't think anything of it, later when I went to start a podcast a 'this episode can't be played on this device' error popped up which began my 4 hour troubleshooting journey.

Things I've tried.

  1. I checked to make sure I have no VPN turned on. No Change.
  2. I checked the content and privacy settings to make sure something didn't get messed up in the update somehow. No change.
  3. I went to my reset iPhone settings and reset my network settings. No change.
  4. I deleted the podcast app then redownloaded it from the app store. I then launched the app via the store as I'd seen that as a potential fix too but again no change.
  5. I've restarted my phone. No Change.
  6. I've turned off local wifi and attempted to use Data. No change.
  7. What's shown the most promise or worst I'm not sure yet is I went to my storage settings and deleted the downloaded episodes of various podcasts in case there was an error there. It didn't help with most of the podcasts. However, when I was done redownloading the podcast app it auto downloaded the first episode of several podcasts I was following. Which somehow I can listen to via the downloaded tab and those specific podcasts continue to work normally even outside of that one downloaded episode. A few examples are "The Dead" and "SCP: Find Us Alive". Meanwhile no other podcasts seem to work, even random ones I'd never looked at before. I've attempted to download episodes in case it's a streaming error but they just get an 'unable to download podcast' error unless it's one of those select few that already have one episode downloaded.

I've tried several of these multiple times, changing their order to see if that will fix the issue. I've looked up guides but none have offered any solutions that I haven't already tried, except for one that suggested using Imazing to reinstall my IOS update which I'd rather not spend $30 for a yearly subscription to something I don't intend to ever use again.

Based on what you've described, this looks like a podcast subscription/feed authentication issue introduced in iOS 18.7.9, not a general network problem. The fact that auto-downloaded episodes play fine but others won't stream or download is a key clue.

Things you haven't tried yet that may help:

1. Sign out and back into Podcasts:

- Go to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases

- Tap Sign Out, then sign back in

- This re-authenticates your Podcasts library

2. Clear Podcasts app data (without deleting the app):

- Go to Settings > Podcasts

- Toggle off "Sync Podcast Subscriptions and Playback"

- Wait 30 seconds, then toggle it back on

- This forces a full re-sync of your subscriptions

3. Check Podcasts restrictions:

- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions

- Make sure Podcasts is set to "All"

- iOS updates sometimes reset content restriction settings

4. Check if the affected podcasts are private/premium feeds:

- Some podcasts require authentication to stream (Patreon-backed, Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, etc.)

- If any affected shows have a lock icon, tap on them and re-enter credentials

5. Force refresh feeds:

- In the Podcasts app, pull down on a podcast's episode list to force refresh

- If episodes still can't load, the feed URL may have changed and the app cache has stale data

6. Try a different DNS:

- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap your network > Configure DNS > Manual

- Add 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) as DNS servers

- Some ISP DNS servers can interfere with Apple's CDN for media delivery

If none of these work, I'd suggest reporting the bug to Apple via feedbackassistant.apple.com with your iOS version and affected podcast names, as this may be a regression in iOS 18.7.9.

Thank you for the reply and sorry for my delayed response. I'd actually tried 1 and 2 already since I'd posted that and they hadn't helped. Though by now the problem has been resolved. No idea what helped it though. After around a week it just randomly started working again?

When I go jogging I listen to podcasts after six days of clicking on one getting the error then switching to one of the ones that was working it just randomly downloaded and started working normally.

Turns out whatever was wrong with it was also affecting the uber app too since that was suddenly working too.
