my face recognition works fine on my iPhone but when I tried to enter a passcode the phone claims I already had one. I do not. should I just give up on the passcode?

Original Title: passcode issues
To be clear, it is NOT possible to set up Face ID without FIRST creating a passcode on iPhone or iPad. The fact you are using Face ID means you did create a passcode. If you don't know the passcode, this is ultimately going to be a major issue for you. If you restart your phone, update your phone, force restart your phone, your phone will require you to enter your passcode in order to get back in your iPhone.
Noting the passcode you created when you first set up the phone would have been a very smart thing to do. Since you don't know it, before you get in trouble, which you will, because not knowing the passcode will ultimately lock you out of the phone, you need to follow the directions in this link --> If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support
Before you do this, make sure you have backed up your iPhone as you'll want to restore your backup after you erase your phone, which you need to do.
To ensure you don't get in this pickle again and you set up the phone again and create a passcode, make sure you write that code down and keep it in a safe place for easy recall in the future.
