Why is MacBook Neo storage 245.05 GB instead of 256 GB?

I recently discovered the MacBook Neo doesn't have 256 gb of storage it has 245.05 gb and I’m wondering why that is

MacBook Neo 13″, macOS 26.5

Formatting overhead and the difference in how marketing and Operating systems calculate (base 10 vs base 16).

Base 2 for many units displayed, and storage marketing likes to display units in base 10. Bigger numbers, in base 10. And formatting overhead, as mentioned.

This is gigabytes versus gibibytes, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte

PS: 256 GB (or 256 GiB) is often tight, and can involve ongoing storage management, particularly as apps and macOS and usage all increase.

PPS: Every base is base 10. 😉 (old math joke)
