iCloud Messages: Clear iPad storage, keep iPhone messages (with no risk of losing them in the future)

Question about ICloud sync/deletion: I have one IPhone and one IPad synced to the same apple ID/icloud, as well as a bunch of messages (that I want to keep on my phone). However they take up a bunch of storage on my IPad that i need to clear up. How do I do this without deleting them from my phone/risk them disappearing completely?

I've been browsing around and it seems to me that I just need to turn off ICloud sync on my IPad (account>icloud>saved on icloud>messages>turn off) which unsyncs deletions, however some people online say that I risk losing my messages on my phone as well should I ever turn the sync back on. Is this true, and if so, is there any way of preventing this?

Hi kajsgajs,

Great question - this is a common concern and the good news is you can safely clear Messages from your iPad without risking your iPhone messages. Here's the safest way to do it:

The safest approach - turn off iCloud Messages on iPad only:

1. On your iPad, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Show All → Messages, then toggle it OFF

2. When prompted, choose "Keep on My iPad" (this keeps a local copy on the iPad, separate from iCloud)

3. Now you can go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages and offload or delete the Messages app data on iPad

4. Your iPhone messages remain fully intact in iCloud and on your iPhone

Regarding your concern about turning sync back on later:

- Yes, there IS a risk if you turn iCloud Messages back on later on the iPad - it could try to sync and potentially overwrite

- The safest move is to leave iCloud Messages OFF on the iPad permanently if you don't need Messages on iPad

- Alternatively, if you want to re-enable it later, make sure your iPhone still has all messages intact before doing so - iCloud will then sync from the iPhone's copy

Additional tip to reclaim storage on iPad without touching Messages at all:

- Go to Settings → General → iPad Storage and look for other large apps to offload first

- You can also enable "Optimize Storage" for Photos which is often a bigger storage hog

Your messages on your iPhone are safe as long as you don't delete them from the iPhone itself. Hope this helps!
