Home app accessories unavailable on iPad mini 2

Greetings,

I setup a second iPad for the home app but all the accessories say unavailable?

My primary device is an iPad 10th generation.

My secondary is a iPad Mini 2 (Software Version 12.5.8).

Both are updated to the latest they can be, in the same room, and on the same wifi network.

On the primary iPad the accessories in the home app are working fine.

On the secondary iPad they all (mostly) say unavailable. The few that don’t are not plugged in or in use at this time.

Other symptoms: not all the rooms show up but most do on the secondary iPad.

Addition Information: I have a HomePod mini as my primary hub with two more that can be automatically according to what the system chooses. Routers are wifi 7 and stable. IPad Mini 2 was factory reset and setup new just for trying to use the Home App.

Would love support on this, as I am running low on ideas for self help. Guessing this is an older version of the home app issue yet the accessories show? They just say unavailable though? What’s your thought? What direction to go?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Thank you for the detailed description — it really helps narrow this down. Based on what you've shared, the most likely cause is a HomeKit compatibility limitation with the iPad mini 2 running iOS 12.5.8.

Here's what's happening and why:

The iPad mini 2 is capped at iOS 12, which means it is running a significantly older version of the Home app and HomeKit framework. Apple's HomeKit has gone through major architectural upgrades since iOS 16 (the new Home architecture introduced in iOS 16.2 and later), and accessories that work perfectly on your iPad 10th gen (running a modern iPadOS) may simply not be compatible with the older HomeKit version on the iPad mini 2.

This explains why:

- Most accessories show as "Unavailable" on the secondary iPad but work fine on the primary.

- Not all rooms show up — newer room and zone structures in modern HomeKit are not fully backwards-compatible with iOS 12.

- The few that do show up are likely older, simpler accessories.

What you can try:

1. Check Home app version compatibility:

- Unfortunately, iOS 12 cannot be upgraded further on the iPad mini 2. The Home app on iOS 12 will always be limited in how it communicates with modern HomeKit hubs (like your HomePod minis running latest firmware).

2. Use the iPad 10th gen as your primary Home app device:

- It sounds like you're already doing this, which is the right approach. The iPad mini 2 will likely never show all accessories reliably due to the iOS version gap.

3. Consider an alternative for secondary control:

- If you want a secondary Home control device, an older iPhone running at least iOS 16, or even an Apple TV, would be much more compatible with your modern HomeKit setup.

4. Check HomePod firmware:

- Make sure your HomePod minis are updated to the latest firmware: Home app → tap the HomePod → check for firmware updates. Outdated hub firmware can also cause accessories to show as unavailable.

In short: the iPad mini 2 running iOS 12 is the limiting factor here. It can't fully communicate with a modern HomeKit setup. Using it as a Home app controller alongside modern HomePod hubs will likely always result in these kinds of inconsistencies.

Hope that helps clarify things!

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed response. That confirms my suspicions. I was mostly only wanting to view cams on the mini. Most of my accessories are pretty old, so old some led light strips are failing. I will try messing with the mini to see what it’s highest best use is considering 12 is the cap. Meaning rather than to use the Home app.

Your response will save me a lot of troubleshooting that would have gone nowhere so thank you again. I gave your response a thumbs up.

I have one more question. On any Apple device (example iPad Pro M4) that my Apple Home is shared with (meaning a different Apple ID account) gets these pop ups every time I bring up the Home app. Over and over and over again. So I can check the cams, go to the news then right back to the cams the pops start over again. I closed the app and rebooted the iPad Pro. Still happening.

This happened (seemingly) because of trying to get the iPad mini going. I re-invented my other account from the iPad 10th gen. Since then the personal account (all devices) seem to be starting over/setting up this other home in the home app again and again.

I have an iPad (10th gen) that is primarily dedicated to home automation that is different than my personal iPad/devises to distribute the load of the previously unknown automation apps, bandwidth and such of home automation. I share that home with my personal iPad iPhone etc.

Yet to start over every single time the home app is used on the personal iPad/iPhone/etc is new?
