Studio Display XDR auto brightness fluctuates widely

I have a 2026 Studio Display XDR paired with MacBook Pro M4 Max.

I have System Settings > Displays > Auto Adjust Brightness enable.

This setup is almost impossible to use as the brightness changes significantly with small variation in either the ambient or natural (through the window) light. There are times when the display almost completely darkens (brightness slider goes to near zero) or completely brightens (brightness slider goes to full) with virtually no change in the surrounding lighting. This occurs during both daytime and nighttime.

This strange behaviour was reported to Apple engineering -- inclusive of supportying videos -- who responded that the monitor is responding as designed and that the extreme changes were caused by changes in cloud cover through the window as the XDR version (unlike the standard version) has 3 light sensors. While I understand cloud cover changes can change the brightness, the change was extreme in that went almost entirely dark!

Would appreciate feedback from others whether their displays have the same sensitivity so I can determine next steps as I need to get this sorted.

I havent experienced this issue on my Apple Studio Display XDR (Auto brightness enabled on MAC Studio) located in my office opposite a window - Some (not much however) Info that may help you from my searches:

The Apple Studio Display XDR uses three light sensors to adjust brightness, making it significantly more sensitive to ambient light changes than the standard Studio Display.

Apple engineering has confirmed that extreme fluctuations, such as the screen dimming or brightening due to passing clouds or window light, are responsible and by design rather than a defect.

To stabilize the display, you can take the following actions:

Disable Automatic Brightness: Go to System Settings > Displays and turn off Automatically Adjust Brightness to manually control the level.
Check Sensor Obstruction: Ensure the ambient light sensors in the top bezel are clean and not blocked by tape, webcam mounts, or dust.
Update Firmware: Ensure your Mac and the Studio Display XDR are running the latest macOS and firmware updates, as Apple frequently releases patches for display behavior.
Manual Override: If you require consistent high brightness for SDR content, third-party tools like Better Display can sometimes bypass software caps, though this may affect color accuracy.
