There is device storage and there is iCloud storage. If you open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and you see you are very low in storage, the way to get rid of that message is to delete things you don't or use on your iPhone, which can include Apps, Photos, Music, Files, Messages, Email, etc. Phones which are running out of memory can't operate optimally.


If you are low in iCloud Storage, which you can check at Settings > Tap your Name at the top > iCloud - if you don't have enough space in iCloud, you'll not be able to back up your iPhone, which means that if you lose the phone or it is stolen, you'll lose data not backed up. For this you buy more space in the cloud and this link will help with that --> Buy iCloud+ or upgrade your current storage plan - Apple Support
