Upgrade iMac Ventura for Nikon camera compatibility?

I have a 27" built in Retna Display iMac running Ventura 13.7.8 I just got a camera and to download the information from Nikon I must have Tahoe,Sequia 15 or Sonoma 14. Can this be done on my computer and how do I do it?

Click Apple menu  > About This Mac to find exactly which Mac model and year you have.

➡️ macOS 14 Sonoma is compatible with these computers

➡️ macOS 15 Sequoia is compatible with these computers

➡️ macOS 26 Tahoe is compatible with these computers

If your Mac is compatible with one of these newer macOS versions, then this:

As Servant of Cats pointed out, where your new Nikon camera is not yet supported by Apple's Digital Camera RAW, you can choose to shoot in JPEG, or upon installing Adobe's Digital Negative Converter, it will convert any RAW .NEF image to .DNG in an arbitrarily named (e.g. NEF2DNG) folder that you point the Adobe application too.

That conversion allows you to see the .DNG image in Finder, Quick Look, Apple's Preview, or Photos. I keep a copy of the Adobe software on my Mac for unsupported RAW formats.

Note that Adobe uses their own Raw conversion code – so sometimes the list of Raw formats that Adobe supports differs from the list that macOS supports.

If the Raw format for your Nikon camera is supported by the Adobe Digital Negative Converter, but not by macOS, you may be able to run your Nikon Raw files through the Digital Negative Converter to produce "equivalent" .DNG files that macOS, and applications that use the macOS Raw support libraries, can understand.

In addition to D.I. Johnson's advice and links, a newly released Nikon camera may not yet be supported in Apple's Digital Camera RAW format. The Nikon NEF RAW format will be different for each individual camera model. Apple does not make its camera RAW support retroactive to older operating systems, and new camera support may take months depending upon Nikon's expediency in providing that data to Apple, and the latter testing, and incorporating it into updated product release planning.

If your new Nikon camera's is not yet supported in the following lists, its RAW images may not appear as Finder icons, in Apple's Quick Look, or Preview.

Confirm RAW Nikon NEF formats supported by cameras listed in:
