Transferring iTunes for Windows music and playlists to Mac

im sure this was asked before but too many messages for me

to search through.

just got a Mac- I know I can transfer my music mp3s via thumb drive but I use iTunes for windows to create and manage my songs and playlists that I sync to my phone. Since the iTunes program has been discontinued how do I transfer my playlists to the Mac so as I obtain more music in the future I can add them to my phone.

Thank you!

Hi,

To transfer your iTunes library from Windows to Mac, you must copy the entire library folder rather than just the music files.

1. Prepare the Windows PC Open iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and ensure both Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized and Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library are checked. Next, go to File > Library > Organize Library and select Consolidate Files to ensure all media is in the correct folder.

2. Copy the Library Files Locate your iTunes folder (default: C:\Users\[Username]\Music\iTunes). Copy this entire folder to an external drive or network location. On your new Mac, paste this folder into your Music directory (~/Music/).

3. Import on Mac: On the Mac, hold the Option key while launching Music (or iTunes). Click Choose Library and select the iTunes Library.itl file you just copied.

The app should automatically locate your media and restore all playlists, ratings, and play counts.

Alternative: Export Playlists Only If you only need to move playlists and not the full library, use File > Library > Export Library on Windows to save an .xml file.

On the Mac, go to File > Library > Import Playlist and select that file.

Note that this method does not transfer ratings, play counts, or media files, only the playlist structure.
