Text messages disappearing on iPhone and iPad

Why are my text messages disappearing? When I go to re-read or send a text to some people, there are no previous texts under their name. Just a blank screen. Also a few texts now have a date of 2000, but I didn’t even have a phone then. What is going on and how can I fix it?

PS this is happening on my phone and iPad but this web page wont let me select my phone.

Hi,

Text messages disappearing on iPhone and iPad is typically caused by automatic deletion settings, iCloud sync issues, or software glitches.

  • Check Message History Settings: Navigate to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages. If set to 30 Days or 1 Year, older texts are permanently deleted; change this to Forever to prevent future loss.
  • Review iCloud Sync: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Messages and ensure Sync this iPhone is enabled.
  •  If messages are missing after an update (like iOS 18), toggle this setting off and back on to force a resync from iCloud.
  • Recover Recently Deleted: Open the Messages app, tap Edit or Filters, and select Show Recently Deleted. Conversations deleted within the last 30 days can be restored from here.
  • Troubleshoot Glitches: Force restart your device, toggle iMessage and MMS Messaging off and on in Settings, or check for insufficient storage space which can prevent message history from loading.
