"Liquid in USB-C Port" Error message

I keep getting error message "Liquid has been found in the USB-C Port" on my MacBook Air - which doesn't have a USB-C Port! What's going on?

USB-C ports on a device should ideally be clearly marked, but Apple doesn't believe in providing unsightly markings (at least on their laptops these days).


Usually if a USB-C port or cable is not marked with the standard/protocol it supports, then assume the worst and it only supports USB data protocols or perhaps is only a charging cable/port (generally charging ports on devices will show a power symbol of some sort).


Thing is, the MacBook Air [15" 2024] has never been near anything liquid - other than the high humidity we've been having these past two days! Can that do it?
As for the ports - I am a light user, and haven't plugged anything into these ports for days, so no liquid from that potential source either.

Keep in mind that any dirt/dust which builds up between the contacts on the USB-C port itself, or even on the Logic Board connector (and its solder joints) could trigger a condition. Also, whatever method Apple is using to determine a potential electrical short may be too sensitive and could be giving false positives. I'm sure it is tricky striking the right combination to alert the user.


Plus if anything was already on the contacts or internal connectors & circuits, perhaps it wasn't enough to initially cause a problem, but corrosion can build up over time and any dirt can accumulate more dirt & mixed with high humidity could cause an alert.


This new Apple feature can both be a good & bad thing. I can tell you from personal experience supporting my organization's Mac......the USB-C ports seem to attract liquid and it only takes a small drop that my splash into the port to cause a problem. I've encountered so many damaged USB-C ports that I always examine them even when the user is not reporting an issue with the ports.


Unfortunately we have no idea whether your laptop is actually experience a potential electrical short on a USB-C port/circuit, or if it is just a too sensitive Apple configuration for the alert and it is just a false positive. If you continue to receive this alert, then you will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine your laptop to see if there is any issue with those ports or their internal connectors & circuits. You should definitely provide them a copy of the Apple article since I'm sure they are not aware of this new change to macOS alerting users to potential liquid damage to the USB-C ports.

According to Apple, it is relatively recent, since Sequoia, and only for Silicon Macs:


"In macOS Sequoia or later, when you connect a USB-C cable or accessory, your MacBook Neo, MacBook Air with M3, M4, or M5 chip, or MacBook Pro with M3 Pro, M3 Max, M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max, M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max chip can warn you if there's liquid in the port."

Hi Chattanoogan,


I think you nailed it. Before this current heat and humidity wave, we had a very long, cool spring, and my apartment doesn’t distinguish very much between outside weather and inside weather! So it probably did go from a cool environment to a hot and humid one just by sitting on my desk!


And thanks to all for your recommendations to get it checked out at an Apple Store. I’m going full tilt at a painting job right now, but once I have a moment to catch my breath, I will take it down to get it looked at.
