GarageBand loops and sounds greyed out, cannot redownload

Hey! I recently may have deleted my entire GarageBand Sound Library on my MacOS due to storage issues. It's no worry, as the instruments can be redownloaded easily. However, I had run into an issue with the loops. The audio files/loops GarageBand has.

Normally you'd have a download button if you didn't download it yet. But it's not there. It's simply greyed out. I cannot redownload those loops I deleted. Now I've actually encountered this issue before and I went on with stuff. But now it's an issue cause my favorite/reused loops are undownloadable. I literally cannot redownload them. And it's such a weird issue. I also tried downloading the Essential Sounds but it doesn't work for any reason. They remain greyed out. I will try to download the entire sound library and if that works. But I don't think it will; I may have done it before and it didn't work.

How can I solve this?

Hey HI — this usually means GarageBand still thinks those loop files are already installed or the download list is stuck.

Try this:

  • Open GarageBand > Sound Library > Relocate Sound Library if you see it.
  • In GarageBand, go to Sound Library > Download All Available Sounds.
  • Check Mac storage and make sure you have enough free space.
  • Quit GarageBand, restart your Mac, then try again.
  • If it still stays greyed out, delete GarageBand and reinstall it from the App Store.
  • As a last step, reset the Sound Library by removing the GarageBand content folders and letting GarageBand rebuild them.

In simple words: the app is not letting you redownload because it is confused about what is already installed. Reinstalling GarageBand or resetting the sound library usually fixes it.
