How to fix Safari's secure connection issue with Gmail after iPadOS 17.7.11 update?

Hi everyone,

I recently updated my iPad to iPadOS 17.7.11, and since the update, I am frequently getting a connection error in Safari.

Whenever I try to navigate to certain secure websites (specifically noticing it on gmail.com), the page fails to load and displays the following error message:

Safari can't open the page because it couldn't establish a secure connection to the server."

I have already tried a few basic troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists. Has anyone else encountered this certificate/handshake bug on 17.7.11? Are there any known workarounds or specific network settings I should look into to get Safari to validate secure server connections properly again?

Device Details:

 Device: iPad

Current OS: iPadOS 17.7.11 (updated recently)

 Browser: Safari

Thanks in advance for any insights or fixes!

Hello tarandeep210, welcome to the Apple Support Community!

This secure connection problem after an update is often related to a shift in the date and time of the iPad, or a blocking of browsing data (caches and cookies) that invalidates Gmail security certificates. To solve this, go to Settings > General > Date and Time, then make sure the Automatic Setting option is enabled. Then go to Settings > Apps > Safari, then tap "Erase history and site data" before completely restarting your iPad. If the problem persists, you may need to reset your network settings in Settings > General > Transfer or reset iPad > Reset > Reset network settings. Have a nice day :)
