Time Machine showing phantom external drive

My TM backs up two volumes: the internal HD, and an external HD ("Bayou"). Somehow TM has two separate back-ups for Bayou (Bayou and Bayou 1). Now, TM can't complete the initial backs up for all discs (the actual two listed above) because it has invented a third one.I've 1.) found what is in Bayou1 but not in Bayou, and 2.) those 2 items, I finder-dragged them back to the Bayou hard disc. (They check out.) Although I'm now ready to finder-delete the TM backup for Bayou1. But Finder won't let me do this.

Bayou1 is hogging 1.6TB in the TM HD, space that TM complain it needs to complete the initial backup. How can I get rid of it.

Are you backing up the external boot drive while booted to the internal SSD? If so, then that is the problem because of how the "Macintosh HD" volume is constructed ever since macOS 10.15 Catalina. macOS does some behind the scenes magic to make two separate APFS volumes appear as a single entity. Unfortunately that only "works" while booted to that drive. When viewing an external boot drive while booted to the internal SSD....all bets are off with how those APFS volumes will appear to different aspects of macOS (depends a lot on the version of macOS involved as well).

You cannot manually modify or delete items from the TM backup drive because it is now on a read-only volume. If you want to remove a backup you either need to remove the volume(s) from the TM backup or erase the TM backup drive & start fresh (or use another drive if you wish to keep the existing backup). I honestly don't know what happens to the existing TM backup data after removing a volume from TM....it is possible the data may remain on the TM backup drive. Maybe it will just eventually be automatically deleted when TM needs more space for the current backups (this is most likely).

FYI, when interacting with TM, you should always use the TM app interface and not use the Finder to manage the TM backup drive.

It's an M1 chip on a 10,1 Air. (I apologize for not having my signature list this.) The OS is Monterey 12.6.8.

It doesn't look like either of these are a possibility. TM Preferences only give me: the choice of storage device to use for the TM back-up ("Select Disc"), OR which discs to not be backed up ("Options"). For Select Disc, Po'Sport is already chosen but appears a 2d time as a possible additional disc for TM use. For Options, Po'Sport is the only offered to deselect from back-ups.

Starting again fresh would seem to be only option available. The downside would be that the laptop's back-up (which is working properly) would also be trash .

I hope these details are useful. I'm grateful for your helpfulness.
