How to prevent accidental screen-off when covering iPhone's front camera?

Why did Apple remove the setting to turn off the screen whenever the front camera is covered? I’m really getting tired of making 15 minute videos of the inside of my pocket.

I don't believe there has ever been a setting on iPhone that turns off the screen if you are walking around with your iPhone in your pocket. But you could completely avoid having unintended touch on your iPhone by turning off Tap to Wake in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Tap to Wake - turn this off and you won't accidentally engage your phone when you're carrying it in your pocket.

There are two steps to turn off the screen.

  1. Check your iPhone display before you put it aside or in the pocket. iPhone display will turn off only after your Auto-Lock time settings.
  2. If the display is ON, lock the screen using the side button and check your iPhone display before you put it in the pocket

I don't think there has ever been a general iPhone setting that lets you disable the screen using the proximity sensor, i.e. “turn the screen off when the front camera (or the sensor area) is covered.” That behaviour has always been managed automatically by iOS using the proximity sensor (and, on newer models, the TrueDepth sensor system).

During phone calls (and sometimes FaceTime): Covering the sensor area near the front camera causes the display to turn off to prevent accidental touches. This is automatic and cannot be turned off in Settings.
