iOS 26 Depth Effect on lock screen background randomly turns off

There is a bug I am dealing with on iOS 26.5.1 (iPhone 17 Pro) where the lock screen Depth Effect sometimes doesn't save and disables itself on its own on random individual backgrounds. I customized my lock screen to rotate between 47 different lock screen images (a lot, I know) every time I wake the phone, and many of them support Depth Effect.

Depth Effect will randomly turn itself off on random images, and I'll have to customize my lock screen and cycle through all of the images to turn it back on for those, and then Depth Effect will turn itself off on different images, and I have to go fix those, and so I get stuck in a loop of fixing something that's constantly breaking itself.

I'm wondering if others are dealing with this issue, and hope that Apple developers become/are aware of this issue and address it in a future update. If there is a fix in the current iOS settings that I can do myself, great! Maybe the amount of backgrounds I have is too many and is causing the issue, but I'd be surprised if iOS couldn't handle that many backgrounds. But if I can't fix it, I'll just hope that Apple fixes it.

iOS 26 Depth Effect Issues:

A. Update the iOS26.5.2

Update once more —iOS26.5.2 was just release two days ago. Lots is mentioned about memory handling fixes —something that keeps apps running as they should (along with security patches for malicious and intrusive apps). IMPORTANT: Be certain the create a backup of your entire iPhone, by backing it up to a Mac or PC, prior to doing so; that way, you can have something to restore your iPhone from. Create the backup both prior to, and after installing an update.

B. Try Turning OF Live Photos --things are moving around --so expect it to fail. Turning off Live Photos in-full would dismay this occurrence.

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Camera
  3. Tap: Preserve Settings
  4. Toggle On: Live Photos

C. Remove Widgets:

With contrast, I would expect widgets would get in the way, appearing as on-top images. Go Here: Add, Edit, and Remove Widgets on iPhone - Apple Support

Third‑party photos may not always behave as expected when cropped, resized, or applied as wallpapers on an iPhone, particularly when using the depth effect. This is usually due to how external images interact with Apple’s display and rendering system rather than a flaw in iOS itself.

Possible Reasons:

  • Aspect ratio mismatch: Images that don’t align with the iPhone’s native screen dimensions may appear stretched, cropped incorrectly, or lose important details.
  • Resolution limitations: Low‑quality or compressed images may not scale well, leading to pixelation or blurred edges.
  • Metadata differences: Third‑party photos often lack the embedded depth or portrait data that Apple’s system relies on to create the layered wallpaper effect.
  • File format issues: Certain formats or editing methods may strip out compatibility features, reducing how the wallpaper responds to iOS effects.

Recommendations to Address the Issue:

  • Use high‑resolution images that match or exceed your iPhone’s screen resolution.
  • Prefer photos taken with the iPhone’s own camera, as they include depth and portrait metadata optimised for wallpaper effects.
  • Save edited third‑party images in standard formats (JPEG or PNG) to maintain compatibility.
  • Test different cropping options within iOS wallpaper settings rather than relying solely on external editing apps.
  • If the depth effect doesn’t work, try disabling it or using a simpler wallpaper style for a cleaner look.

Diagnostic step: Test the depth effect using one of Apple’s built‑in wallpapers. If the built‑in wallpaper works correctly, the issue lies with the photo being used. If it doesn’t, the problem is likely with the depth effect itself.
