How do I prevent apps from disappearing on my iPhone home screen?

An app disappears on my home screen. Why doesn’t Apple give us the option to lock the home screen so this doesn’t happen?

Hello BobNeiman, and welcome to the Apple Support Community.

If an app disappears from your Home Screen, it usually hasn’t been deleted. In most cases, it has either been removed from the Home Screenhidden, or moved to the App Library.

Apple does not currently offer an option to lock the Home Screen layout to prevent accidental changes.

Here are a few things you can check:

  1. Swipe to the App Library and search for the missing app. If you find it, touch and hold the app, then tap Add to Home Screen.
  2. Check whether the app has been hidden. You can review your hidden apps in Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps (if applicable on your version of iOS).
  3. If multiple apps or entire pages seem to be missing, verify that no Home Screen pages have been hidden by entering jiggle mode and tapping the page indicator dots.
  4. If this happens repeatedly without any action on your part, and especially if it began after updating to iOS 26, it could indicate a software issue. In that case, make sure your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS release.

It likely happened when the phone was in my pocket and the app got deleted without my consciously doing it. This has happened numerous times and it’s very annoying. Having a way to lock the Home Screen would be very helpful

The screen cannot be edited unless it is unlocked.

Thus, that can only happen if you put the iPhone in your pocket before locking the screen, AND you put it facing your body. Thus, locking the screen before you put it in your pocket (press the SIDE button) mostly solves the problem; finally when you put the phone in your pocket position it so the face is away from your body so near skin contact can’t unlock the screen.

An app disappearing on your Home Screen is abnormal behavior. Rather than seek an option to prevent this behavior, it would be better to recognize it as abnormal and endeavor to find the cause.

Perhaps, for example, your iPhone storage is full. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and be certain your free space never falls below 6GB.

If that is not the issue, then try to tell us non-standard things that might be part of your scenario.
