• Just don't confuse the notification when fast charging telling you that the iPhone needs to cool down to continue charging with an overheat condition. This is a feature to protect your battery as fast charging does produce heat and the notification is expected when you reach 80%.
• Also when you said the iPhone stopped working on one occasion, it is not clear if you are referring to the thermometer screen posted by Bob Timmons or if an app crashed that returned you to the Home Screen. Some apps do contain bugs, especially those by Meta, and an update by the developer is what would be needed to resolve that problem.
• Yes, the iPhone 17 does run warm using a faster processor not found in other devices. It includes sensors to prevent overheating and as long as you don't see the thermometer screen, it is operating in its expected temperature range.
• Returns for a refund are done by Apple within the first 14 days in most regions when purchased at Apple and that can be done for any reason. Using Apple finance makes no difference within the 14 days, anything after that is done at the discretion of Apple.
• Not sure about the conversation you had with phone line tech support saying to stop using it if it heats up, because if you see the overheat condition with the thermometer screen you don't have a choice. Beyond that your phone is going to heat up, especially when using WhatsApp, the Camera, and couple that with some background streaming.
• As for depleting the battery quickly, post the screenshot of both battery graphs and the top 5 apps consuming your battery at Settings > Battery > View All Usage. Apps noted as using Background Activity are using your battery even when the app is not open and will produce heat while they are doing that. The more you have the more heat you can expect.

As already suggested, WhatsApp is a power monster and it will not only drain your battery faster, but generate more heat. When you push a battery harder, it naturally generates heat in a process called Thermodynamic Exchange. Battery works harder, heat is generated and you feel the heat holding the phone. And as already suggested, unless you're seeing a Red Thermometer, your phone is NOT overheating.

Apple doesn't own Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp/Facebook/Instagram. Their apps are without doubt buggy and use a lot of power. It would make complete sense that using WhatsApp in a video call on a train, with cellular would be a particularly challenging scenario for any cell phone (not just iPhone). Taking photos with your camera, while at the same time streaming music from Spotify would also push your battery hard. Just taking photos is battery intensive. Adding streaming to that and you would definitely notice the phone running hotter. This is the science of batteries in our modern electronic world.

Based on what you've described there is very likely nothing wrong with your phone at all.

Do you see the message in the Battery Settings, that the setup has not completed indexing files in the background yet? That usually takes about 4 days after every update and there are additional indexing being performed in this update to make it ready for iOS 27. It will finish faster if you leave your phone plugged in at night and connected to WiFi. I recommend to use the Optimized Charging option and charge your phone all night, every night, so it learns this charging behavior and automatically places charging on hold at 80% until just before you normally take it off the charger.

Apple provides a Support Article here for what you should expect after any Software Update and it says you should see battery drain, heat, and even some UI lag while this background indexing is being performed. That is also why we always see the same posts after every single update from users saying they are experiencing battery drain and heat.

WhatsApp is one of the most power hungry apps that you can use. The developers at Meta / WhatsApp have updated their app over 20 times in the last month or two to try to reduce the power demands of the app. I've stopped using WhatsApp because it is getting worse....not better....in terms of using up the battery.
