New iPhone 17 runs hot and depletes battery quickly using more than one App at a time

Hi, sorry to hear about your user experience. I do a lot of photography with my iPhone 17 Pro Max. My iPhone also gets warm when photographing for a period of time. Were you using the native Apple Camera app or a third party app? My iPhone gets quite warm too when I use the native camera app.

I’m using iOS 26.6 which has helped in regard to operating temperatures. But I also have the disadvantage of using my iPhone in a pretty hot environment, Florida. Today when I went out it was into the 90’s and not even 10 AM. But the iPhone did well and I photographed on and off for about two hours without any issues.

One thing I will suggest is not charging an already warm iPhone. iPhones, like virtually all newer smartphones, are designed to fast charge. Fast charging generates a lot of heat, which only exacerbates any temperature issue.

You may want to explore active cooling devices. The device attaches via MagSafe and can cool the device 20° or more in just a few minutes. Another option is small ice packs that the iPhone can rest on and it cools quite fast as well.

Lastly, I’d suggest updating your iPhone to iOS 26.6. It made a lot of improvements for many users experiencing heat issues. Good luck.

• Just don't confuse the notification when fast charging telling you that the iPhone needs to cool down to continue charging with an overheat condition. This is a feature to protect your battery as fast charging does produce heat and the notification is expected when you reach 80%.
• Also when you said the iPhone stopped working on one occasion, it is not clear if you are referring to the thermometer screen posted by Bob Timmons or if an app crashed that returned you to the Home Screen. Some apps do contain bugs, especially those by Meta, and an update by the developer is what would be needed to resolve that problem.
• Yes, the iPhone 17 does run warm using a faster processor not found in other devices. It includes sensors to prevent overheating and as long as you don't see the thermometer screen, it is operating in its expected temperature range.
• Returns for a refund are done by Apple within the first 14 days in most regions when purchased at Apple and that can be done for any reason. Using Apple finance makes no difference within the 14 days, anything after that is done at the discretion of Apple.
• Not sure about the conversation you had with phone line tech support saying to stop using it if it heats up, because if you see the overheat condition with the thermometer screen you don't have a choice. Beyond that your phone is going to heat up, especially when using WhatsApp, the Camera, and couple that with some background streaming.
• As for depleting the battery quickly, post the screenshot of both battery graphs and the top 5 apps consuming your battery at Settings > Battery > View All Usage. Apps noted as using Background Activity are using your battery even when the app is not open and will produce heat while they are doing that. The more you have the more heat you can expect.

As already suggested, WhatsApp is a power monster and it will not only drain your battery faster, but generate more heat. When you push a battery harder, it naturally generates heat in a process called Thermodynamic Exchange. Battery works harder, heat is generated and you feel the heat holding the phone. And as already suggested, unless you're seeing a Red Thermometer, your phone is NOT overheating.

Apple doesn't own Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp/Facebook/Instagram. Their apps are without doubt buggy and use a lot of power. It would make complete sense that using WhatsApp in a video call on a train, with cellular would be a particularly challenging scenario for any cell phone (not just iPhone). Taking photos with your camera, while at the same time streaming music from Spotify would also push your battery hard. Just taking photos is battery intensive. Adding streaming to that and you would definitely notice the phone running hotter. This is the science of batteries in our modern electronic world.

Based on what you've described there is very likely nothing wrong with your phone at all.

Do you see the message in the Battery Settings, that the setup has not completed indexing files in the background yet? That usually takes about 4 days after every update and there are additional indexing being performed in this update to make it ready for iOS 27. It will finish faster if you leave your phone plugged in at night and connected to WiFi. I recommend to use the Optimized Charging option and charge your phone all night, every night, so it learns this charging behavior and automatically places charging on hold at 80% until just before you normally take it off the charger.

Apple provides a Support Article here for what you should expect after any Software Update and it says you should see battery drain, heat, and even some UI lag while this background indexing is being performed. That is also why we always see the same posts after every single update from users saying they are experiencing battery drain and heat.

After the indexing has completed, feel free to post the screenshot of the 2 battery graphs and the top 5 apps that are consuming the battery at Settings > Battery > View All Usage.

Since we’re close to the expected launch of iOS 27 (typically released every September) I think I’d just wait for the release. Then backup your SE, erase your iPhone 17, setup as a new device and upgrade to iOS 27. Lastly restore the iPhone 17 with your backup of your SE. It’s a little bit of effort and time, but I’m sure the Apple Store would do it all for you, considering the past issues you’ve had. iPhone 17 Pro getting warm and losing 20%+ battery even when completely powered off after updating to iOS 27

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing a very unusual battery and temperature issue with my iPhone 17 Pro after updating to iOS 27.

I updated my iPhone about a week ago. For the first two days, everything was completely normal — the phone was smooth, cool, and battery life seemed normal.

However, starting around the third day, the phone began staying noticeably warm during normal/light use, and the battery started draining much faster than before.

What concerns me most is that the battery continues to drain significantly even when the iPhone is completely shut down.

What I have already tried:

• Force restarting the iPhone using the button combination
• Turning off Siri Beta
• Fully backing up the iPhone
• Performing a complete factory reset
• Setting the phone up again after the reset

Unfortunately, none of these resolved the issue.

The shutdown test

I completely shut down the iPhone before going to sleep and left it untouched for approximately 6 hours.

Before shutting it down, I checked the battery percentage.

When I checked it again after those 6 hours, the battery had dropped by more than 20% even though the iPhone had been completely powered off.

I also noticed that the phone was still noticeably warm when I picked it up before turning it back on.

This is what makes me think this may be more than normal post-update background activity.

The phone did not have any apps running because it was completely shut down.

Device information

• Model: iPhone 17 Pro
• Software: iOS 27
• Phone's Battery Health: 99%
• Charge Cycles: 92
• Problem started: Approximately 2 days after the iOS 27 update
• Battery drain: Very high during normal use
• Temperature: Consistently warm even during light use
• Shutdown drain: More than 20% over approximately 6 hours while completely powered off
• Factory reset: Already performed, but the problem remains

* I Have NEVER DROPPED my iPhone once, so There are NO ANY PHYSICAL DAMAGES!!!

Has anyone else experienced significant battery drain and warmth like this after iOS 27, particularly battery loss while the iPhone is completely powered off?

Could this indicate a battery, power-management, or hardware issue rather than normal post-update indexing?

Any advice would be appreciated.

(I'm so scared because I'm from Sri Lanka. I bought this phone from Sri Lankan reseller. We don't have Apple Stores in Sri Lanka to Claim remaining 6 months of Apple Care Warranty here)

If the iPhone is overheating, you will see a red thermometer on the screen with a message indicating that the iPhone needs to cool down. Is this what you are seeing frequently?

WhatsApp is one of the most power hungry apps that you can use. The developers at Meta / WhatsApp have updated their app over 20 times in the last month or two to try to reduce the power demands of the app. I've stopped using WhatsApp because it is getting worse....not better....in terms of using up the battery.

iPhones have internal mechanisms to shut down the iPhone and display a warning if it actually was getting as hot as you seem to be claiming.

Are you seeing any warnings or notifications on your screen related to heat?
